Topic 2 DQ 2
Do Dr. King and Pius XI share a view on whether an unjust positive law can or should bind a human conscience informed by the natural law? Explain your response.
Dr. King contends that individuals should demonstrate elevated deference towards unjust laws when they come across them. In his letter, Dr. King asserts that individuals bear a moral responsibility to put an end to unjust laws. Additionally, it asserts that individuals have a moral
obligation to proactively engage in actions rather than indefinitely relying on court proceedings
to attain justice. Therefore, the promotion of unjust justice in any location poses a threat to the existence of justice. Pope Pius XI, who had a keen awareness of legal concerns, urged people to advocate for their rights. He emphasized the importance of international rules and maintained that unjust laws should not be limited to personal matters of conscience, especially when they affect a significant portion of the population.
