Thinking over the entire course, what are two of the most surprising facts you learned? Do you feel your ideas about violence have changed after completing this course? If so, how? If not, why? Did your score on the Fact or Fake quiz improve? Finally, is there a topic that you want to learn more about that we did not cover?
Over the entire course one of the facts that I found most surprising was “School climate seems to be more important in explaining school disorder than community factors.” This fact was surprising to me because I would have assumed that community factors, and the way the child was raised, would have been more influential in explaining school disorder. Another fact that I found very surprising was “Workplace homicides represent about 10% of all workplace fatalities.” This fact was shocking to me because 10% is a large number. When I consider all the possibilities of workplace fatalities, I would have guessed homicide would have amounted to a much a lower number. My ideas of violence has certainly changed after completing this course. This course cleared up many misconceptions and myths that I once believed to be true. I have a lot more statistical data to back up my knowledge of violence now than before I took this course. My initial Fact or Fake quiz, with a grade of
5/15, can attest to how little I knew about violence prior to this course. My Fact
or Fake quiz improved to 15/15. A topic that I would have loved to learn more about is elder violence. I’d want to know about how the elderly experience violence from their family members, friends, or strangers, and what is the statistical data for this type of violence?
