Week 7 DQ
What is the basic philosophy behind the solution-focused approach? Do you feel this approach is effective? Why or why not? What solution-focused approaches do you think would be most applicable for a client suffering with depression? Why do you think these approaches are most effective?
The basic philosophy behind the solution-focused approach is that it works to identify and solve current problems rather than going back in the past and reanalyzing older issues. It works to find solutions and does not dwell on problems in the past. This therapy is also brief in nature, goal oriented, and can benefit people with many different condition (Berek, 2022). I feel this approach is effective because it is a strengths approach and helps a client focus on what they already know. It works to build on their coping skills and encourages the client to utilize them in a healthy way. Exceptions are also a key factor in
this method and the counselor can work with the client to identify the times the problem was either less
or absent altogether and identify what the client did during that time. A solution-focused approach that can be used to treat someone with depression would be to help them identify a future where depression
does not have such as stronghold on their life and how things would be different for them. The counselor
can also help the client to develop small steps that encompass a larger goal that encourages positive changes. A counselor can also use a number of scaling questions to identify the level of intensity of depression and to explore what would help the client shift it into something less intense. Berek, D. L. .
