Select at least one specific legislative regulation that had a personal impact on you, a family member, or a close friend. How has this informed your personal educational philosophy? Support your reflection with scholarly sources. The first legislative regulation that comes to mind for me is Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA). IDEA ensures that all children with disabilities are entitled to free public education to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living (American Psychological Association). Before establishing this law, many children and young adults were denied access to education. On the IDEA website, they state that in the 1970s, U.S. schools educated only one in five children with disabilities. Many states had laws excluding certain students, including children who were deaf, blind, or had an intellectual or emotional disability. “The IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education, and related services to more than 7.5 million (as of school year 2018-19) eligible infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities” (A history of the individuals with disabilities education act, 2020 ). As a former employee of Special Olympics Illinois (SOILL), I learned so much about the laws and regulations that individuals with special needs are left out of. Some these athletes, lived on their own, made an income, participated in SOILL but could not get a proper education. I have seen in my family my autistic cousin overcome challenges with receiving assistance and extra support his entire education career. Now, he is a freshman at University of Wisconsin Eu Claire. I personally needed support my entire education. I was in reading resource classes through college. As someone who is a weaker reader, I was embarrassed to be in those classes but now as an adult I see the value. My personal education philosophy strives to include individuals of all walks of life. Legislative Acts like IDEA, the Able Act, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, and The Assistive Technology Act, allow individuals to receive an education just like everyone else (4 laws that shaped special education in the U.S, 2020).
