PHL 130. Examination #2.
Prof. Ludwig.
(worth 25% of your course grade)
Watch the movie “A Beautiful Mind” starring Russell Crowe.
Answer the following three questions:
1.How would the following ideas from Aurelius Augustine help us better understand the life of Prof. John
Nash
and/or how would the following ideas have helped Prof.
John Nash to a better life?
Terms are:
illumination, sapienta, scientia,
perfection of the soul (in the textbook), God
(4 or 5 of these)
The answer should show that you watched the film and especially that you understand these terms. In
other words, you should not just say something like “Prof. Nash
should have had more sapienta in his
life.”
You would need to explain why he should, what that sapienta would look like, and to what extent
the sapienta should be immediate or mediate.
In other words, you have to show that you have come to
grips with an understanding of the terms explained in this course.
Any of the above terms used by Augustine should be underlined
.
If used more than once, the term should
be underlined each time.
The answer should be 150-200 words.
If it’s overly long, it will be returned.
The number of words used should be clearly typed before or after your answer.
The answer should be pasted into your email along with the answer to question #2.
40 points
2.How would the following ideas from Thomas Aquinas help us better understand the life of Prof. Nash
and/or how would the following ideas have helped Prof.
Nash to a better life?
Terms are:
connaturality, God, telos, Cardinal Sins, Theological Virtues, four causes, potentiality, actuality,
uncaused cause.
(four of these at a minimum)
The answer should show that you watched the film and especially that you understand these terms
. In
other words, you should not just say something like “Prof. Nash
should have had the correct telos in his
life.”
You would need to explain why he should, what the telos would be based upon, and to what extent
his telos should be consistent with Greek and Catholic philosophies.
Any of the above terms used by Aquinas should be underlined.
If used more than once, the term should
be underlined each time.
The answer should be 150-200 words.
If it’s overly long, it will be returned.
The number of words used should be clearly typed before or after your answer.
The answer should be pasted into your email along with the answer to question #2.
