Layla Martiniano Dr. Phillips Short Writing Assignment October 25, 2023 DMD DILLEMA What ethical concerns do you have about the trial? I think that because they live such a short amount of time is worth doing all the trials that they can, but they are testing on children. I think that’s one issue because there could be many unknown side effects that could potentially shorten the life of a child. I can kind of understand why they would want to test It on a child maybe the drug is most effective when introduced to a younger age, but they wouldn’t know that unless they tested on a growing child. It would really be up to the parents at the end of the day because children can’t consent since they don’t comprehend the severity of situations. What should be done to make sure that meaningful consent is obtained for participants? The Doctor should inform the patient and their parents about every harmful possibility/ side affects that this drug could have, explain the risks, and give them the option to freely choose if they want to be involved or not. Since they are testing people who are under age twelve, they should also explain the side effects to the child and how to watch out for bad symptoms. I think that any bad symptoms should also be severely taken into consideration since these are trials.
They should run whatever tests and assessments to make sure that this person’s body is able to process/ receive the drug, I also think that the compensation should be higher. In Rachels, why privacy is important something that caught my interest was when she says that “The idea is that our bodies are ours and so we have the same rights with respect to them that we have to respect to our other possessions” It is interesting that she compares bodies to possessions is she saying that when our privacy is violated does that also mean that our bodies have been violated? Or is this synonymous with bodily autonomy? Overall, in this passage I think that the author is trying to explain how complicated the concept of privacy is, but that privacy is the key to ensuring one’s dignity and safety and that privacy allows us to maintain control in various ways and in different relationships weather that’s with a doctor, significant other, friend or parent. Although I can understand this analogy of possessions being compared to they body someone can violate your possessions like one can violate the body.
