Reflective Journal:
Navigating a Sticky Situation
So, there was this thing that happened at work not too long ago that
really got under my skin. We were working on this team project,
and during the big presentation, my co-worker basically claimed
all the credit for our collaborative efforts. Talk about feeling
betrayed, right?
The Feels and Gut Reaction:
My initial reaction? Pure anger and frustration. I wanted to call
them out right there in the meeting, but I knew that might not be
the best move. It felt like a moral gut punch – the kind that makes
you question who you're really working with.
Stepping Back and Thinking it Through:
After simmering down a bit, I knew I had to think this through. I
was stuck between my gut feeling and trying to handle it more
objectively. You know how sometimes you just want to react
emotionally, but you also know it might not be the smartest move?
That's exactly where I was.
Realizing My Biases:
Looking back, I see that I fell into the trap of assuming the worst
about my co-worker. I jumped to the conclusion that they
deliberately took credit, without even considering if there could be
another side to the story. Emotions were running high, and they
colored my judgment.
Going by the Rulebook: Deontological Ethics in Action:
So, I decided to try this deontological ethics thing. It's all about
following rules and doing your duty, and I figured it might bring
some structure to this mess. My duty, as I saw it, was to be honest
and maintain integrity in our professional collaboration.
How the Rulebook Guided Me:
Applying this deontological stuff made me focus on what I owed
to the situation – honesty and integrity. Instead of creating a scene,
I opted for a one-on-one chat with my co-worker. It was about
addressing the issue directly and emphasizing the importance of
giving credit where it's due.

Breaking It Down Ethically:
From a deontological standpoint, the big no-no was the breach of
honesty and integrity. Claiming our joint effort as solely theirs was
like breaking the golden rule of fairness in teamwork. It made me
question the whole respect and fairness deal in our professional
relationships.
Ethical Principles in Play: Honesty and Fairness:
In this rulebook approach, honesty and fairness were the heroes.
Tackling the issue meant emphasizing these principles. It was
about setting the record straight and demanding fair
acknowledgment for the teamwork we put in.
Reflection on the Rulebook:
Using this deontological thing gave me a bit of a roadmap in
handling the mess. It added some structure to my decision-making,
helping me look beyond the emotions and focus on the principles.
It was a departure from my usual gut-first approach, reminding me
that sometimes, rules can be a handy guide through tricky
situations.
