Concept Check #1: Name: ___________________ Chapter 16-17: Oscillating Waves and Sounds. Simple Harmonic Motion: 1. A pendulum that has a 50.0 g mass on the end of a string oscillates 6 times in 30 seconds. What is the length of the string? (2.5 points) 2. What is the spring constant of a mass-spring that has a mass of 1500 g and a period of 4.5 seconds per oscillation? (2.5 points) Waves: 3. Draw a standing wave that has 5 nodes. If it takes 3.5 seconds to complete this standing wave that has a total length of 2.0m, what is the frequency and wavelength of one wave? (3 points) Sound & Intensity: 4. If the frequency of the fourth harmonic of a vibrating string is 600 Hz, what are the fundamental harmonic and fifth harmonic? (2 points) 5. What is the power of a stereo system that is 4.5 m away and has an intensity of 8.2 x 10 -2 W/m 2 ? (2 points) 6. Calculate the intensity of a stereo that is playing at 55 dβ. (2 points) Doppler Effect: 7. A truck is driving at the speed of 31 m/s to the west and sees a cop driving 39 m/s in the opposite direction. The truck hears a sound of 315 Hz. What is the frequency that is coming from the cop car? Use 343 m/s for the speed of sound. (3 points)
8. A 50 o C, a ferry is traveling away from you as you are standing and watching. The ferry blasts the horn at a frequency of 495 Hz, what sound do you hear as the ferry leaves the port? Don’t forget to calculate the speed of sound at 50 o C. (3 points)
