PRE-LAB Instructions:
Print out these pages. Feel free to refer to the lab instructions and other materials, your
physics textbook, other students, etc. to help you to ponder, understand, and work out
answers to the following question(s). Show your work & answers in the space(s)
provided. PRE-LAB Questions: A car is driven along a straight road. Its distance relative to a cross street is graphed at the right:
1)draw CIRCLES around groups of points that indicate zero velocity for the car.
2) draw PLUS symbols near group points that indicate a positive velocity.
3) draw MINUS symbols near group points that indicate a negative velocity.
4) draw BOXES around groups of points that indicate either positive or negative acceleration for the car
5) In the space below, sketch a graph of the velocity vs. time corresponding to the above chart.

You need to guide a robot from the red dot on the left to the green dot on the right, avoiding the blue
walls along the way.
units
To do this, you must feed it a series of commands of the form "turn degrees and move
forward". Angles are measured in degrees, with positive angles turning counterclockwise, and negative
angles turning clockwise. All turns are relative to the robot's current direction. The grid marks 1 unit
squares.
From the red starting dot, with the robot facing directly to the right, issue your commands: (all commands
should be given as decimal values)

east. Using the Polygon Method, how far from the well and in what direction is
the hidden treasure?

Your instructor purchases a drone. He gets out of the roof of a building and flies the drone 140
meters straight west in 30 seconds, and then flies it 260 meters straight south for 120 seconds. He
lets it hover stationary for 20 seconds, then flies it another 70 meters straight north in a span of 15
seconds, and finally 50 meters straight west in 12 seconds.
9. Calculate the net displacement from start and report this as a single magnitude and clearly
identified direction.
10. What is the magnitude of the helicopter drone's average velocity over this entire
excursion?

Instructions: Your task is to create a model in response to the prompts in the question below. Be sure to apply a model from this class and include the relevant diagram(s) for that model. And don’t forget to use the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning framework to present your solution.
Phenomenon: Runaway Truck Ramp
A truck was driving on a highway at 30 m/s when its brakes gave out. The driver steered it onto a “runaway truck ramp”, consisting of an upward ramp (rising 12 meters vertically over 120 meters horizontally), and ending with a compressible barrier which you can model as a giant spring with spring constant “k”. The compressible barrier can be compressed by a maximum 0.5 meters before it stops working.
Graphic attached
Values: Mass of the truck: 20 metric tons (1 metric ton = 1000kg).
Mass of the driver: Choose a reasonable value.
Truck Ramp Dimensions: 12 meters vertical, 120 meters horizontal
Spring constant k= 6.0 x 107 J/m2.

Reminder: Use clear standard symbolic notation. Assign distinct symbols for everything. Label diagrams
with appropriate symbols in appropriate places. Use symbols in equations, ratios, etc., to lead to
numerical results.
9) (ex) Two vectors A and B are shown in the figure. After you first
determine the components of these two vectors, then determine the
magnitude and direction of the (a) vector sum C = A + B (and draw
these three vectors together), (b) vector difference D=A-B (and
draw these three vectors together), and (c) the vector difference B – A.
A 12.0m
18.0m

Also, (d) write both vectors A and B in (i) unit vector notation and
(ii) MZ notation. Assume all values have 3 sig. figs. (Use clear, standard notation; show all details
of your work. See PSL 3.3-4.)
