Hi Class, I want to discuss the Civil Rights Movement during the Cold War Era. Three significant conditions created the need for the movement: discrimination, racism, and white supremacy (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, n.d.). African Americans formed the Civil Rights Movement to work toward equality. Some of the movement's accomplishments are Congress passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 ( Resourcesforhistoryteachers / Accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement , n.d.). The Voting Rights Act stated that literacy tests and poll taxes would no longer be used to keep anyone from voting. In addition, the act made it illegal to create requirements for any citizen or resident of the United States who wished to vote. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 "prohibited discrimination in public accommodations, employment, labor unions, and schools." ( Resourcesforhistoryteachers / Accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement , n.d.) In addition to these two accomplishments, the movement also helped end segregation. The Civil Rights Movement was led by Martin Luther King Jr. This is when Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the strongest supporters of nonviolent civil disobedience. The United States government's response to the Civil Rights movement was passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. ( Resourcesforhistoryteachers / Accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement , n.d.) There are many issues remaining today when it comes to civil rights. I want to focus on the criminal legal system and inequality ("United States," 2022). In the criminal legal system, minorities are mistreated compared to Caucasians. In addition, the inequality issue is even more prevalent in today's society. It is the cause of a lot of problems, such as gangs. I believe that the Civil Rights Movement has made great strides in society. However, we still have a long way to go before achieving equality or a fair criminal legal system. I am optimistic that the Civil Rights Movement will continue to bring progress for years. References: resourcesforhistoryteachers / Accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement .
