Article Analysis #14- Civil Liberties and Civil Rights
This week’s news is “Joe Biden is Facing a Near Historic Deficit for an Incumbent” analysis by Harry Enten, CNN Politics. This news mainly focuses on the election atmosphere surrounding Joe Biden’s upcoming election campaign in 2024. The leading cause for concern is Biden’s recent poll deficit, which is historically rare for an incumbent at this stage. The two main
characters of the story are Donald Trump, the former president who is rumored to be considering a run for the Presidency in 2024, and Joe Biden, the current president of the United States. This news mainly focuses on polling data showing that Trump and Biden now have a moderate but significant lead.
If every poll appears to be within the margin of error, Harry Enten's detailed analysis shows that the sum of all votes paints a complex picture for Joe Biden’s chances of winning re-
election. The article rejects the idea that Biden’s low polling is due to internal division within the
Democratic Party or discontent among the party’s left wing. Instead, the news suggests that one possible reason may be a significant decline in support among moderates. This news looks at several factors to understand the shift in Biden’s popularity. Interestingly, he rejects the notion that Biden’s problems result from economic issues, noting that at the end of the 2020 campaign, Trump was also supported on financial concerns. The study points to his age as a likely reason

for Biden’s problems. This highlights the dramatic shift in public opinion since the 2020 election,
particularly in how people view Joe Biden’s age.
The assigned article of this week is “Disease Control, Civil Liberties, and Mass Testing Calibrating Restriction during the Covid-19 Pandemic,” coauthored by David M. Studdert, L.L.B., Sc.D., and Mark A. Hall, J.D. This article discusses the immediate responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the effects of widespread restrictions on travel, employment, and daily activities worldwide. This organization acknowledges the adverse effects on the economy and society, such as increased unemployment, school closures, and job closures. The authors discuss possible conflicts between civil rights and public health requirements and difficulties in easing restrictions. The main debate centers on the need for a nuanced approach to discussing control, mainly supporting a mass testing and surveillance program for the entire population to help decide whether to remove or modify restrictions.
The authors main argument is that easing COVID-19 restrictions should be done gradually and thoughtfully to strike a balance between preventing the spread of disease and the preservation of civil liberties. They suggest that the extensive and long-term restrictions associated with COVID-19 are not directly compatible with conventional ideas of quarantine, which focus on exposed or sick people. The authors present an approach that avoids the pitfalls of overboard regulation of individual risk through extensive testing and observation. While not ideal, they believe this strategy is a fair trade-off between preserving civil liberties and fighting diseases.
I agree with the authors that our approach to dealing with the limitations of COVID-19 must be flexible and specific. It seems reasonable- if not necessary- to prioritize mass testing for personal risk assessment to strike a fine balance between disease prevention and preserving civil
