Richard Nixon was a leader in the conservative movement during Lyndon Johnson's
presidency. He opposed Johnson's liberal policies, particularly the Vietnam War. Nixon
campaigned on a promise, goal, to bring an end to the war and was elected 37th
president in 1968 (Chapter 4, p. 1093). Once he was in office, he implemented a policy
known as "Vietnamization", which would gradually shift the responsibility for the war to
the South Vietnamese government while pulling out American troops. This increased
Nixon's popularity with antiwar conservatives because they believed in little military
involvement. Nixon's goals were centered around ending the Vietnam War,
implementing Vietnamization to transfer the responsibility to the South Vietnamese
government, limiting military involvement, and gaining support from antiwar
conservatives.
Nixon wanted to change the civil disruption caused by the Vietnam War. The war lead to
many American lives lost as well as resources without a significant victory. He
campaigned on a promise to bring an end to the war by implementing Vietnamization
and ending the war. I believe Nixon was successful in his conservative movement
because he did fulfill his promise in ending the Vietnam War. He was able to change the
civil disruption. not just anyone can accomplish all that Nixon did.
