Based on the debate, what is the accurate definition of a ‘Plant - based Diet.’ (1 pt) Based on the debate, a plant-based diet consists mostly of foods derived from plants, specifically whole foods from vegetables, fruit, grains, etc., and some high-quality animal source foods. 3.) Why do you think this topic is controversial? (1 pts) This topic is controversial because the definition of plant-based diets can allow for minimal animal products or none whatsoever. However, limiting animal source proteins could lead to nutrient deficiencies despite the higher levels of saturated fats and higher levels of cholesterol compared to plant products, which leads people to avoid animal products. 4.) What was your initial viewpoint (before the debate) as to whether meat should be included in a plant- based diet and why do you feel this way? (1 pt) Initially, I thought that Plant-based diets mainly consisted of foods primarily from plants and that minimal amounts of meat and dairy were able to be consumed in moderation. I thought that vegetarians and vegans completely omitted animal sourced foods, but people who follow plant-based diets should consume a limited number of animal-based products for nutritional benefit. Evidence (There were 2 sides of the debate presented in class. There were points that supported the topic& the counterpoints that refuted the topic. Think about each point/counterpoint discussed in class. Then answer the questions below.) Which single debate point had the ‘best’ evidence to support your initial idea? (1 pt) & why do you think this point was so convincing (2 pts)? Point 2: Plant-based diets that limit (or omit) animal source proteins can lead to nutrient deficiencies or sub- optimal intakes. Lacking nutrients like iron can cause anemia or other health risks/deficiencies. Which single debate point (discussed in class) had the ‘best’ evidence to refute (i.e., go against) your initial idea? (1 pt) & why do you think this point was so convincing (2 pts)? Point 1: Plant-based diets that limit animal source foods reduce health risks. Plants have been found to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, bone issues, colon cancer, and neurocognitive health. On the other hand, animal-based foods like red meat, processed meats, saturated fats, and high fat dairy can negatively impact health by increasing the chances of mortality, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other health detriments. Even if you don’t agree, which overall position had the most convincing evidence (1 pt) & why (2 pts)? The side that argues that animal source proteins are not necessary in plant-based diets has the most convincing evidence. This side clearly highlighted the health benefits of plant-based diets in point 1 and possible detriments in animal products. They also prove that plant-based diets can meet nutrient needs without animal products and show that plant-based alternatives can replace meat and milk products. These three points alone convinced me that animal products can be omitted safely from plant-based diets. Application How has this debate impacted your viewpoint or opinion about this topic? (2 pts) Going into this debate, I believed that animal products should be included in plant-based diets to achieve maximum health benefits. This debate showed me that animal products can benefit your diet if consumed in moderation, but plant-based diets are possible and efficient without them. Plant-based diets without animal products can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and should not be considered unsafe.
