Module 5 Short Responses – Question 1 In the space below, specify which historical lens you'd like to use for this exercise.
For this exercise I would like to use the social lens of history. This is because even though the
civil rights movement has a lot to do with politics, it also affected much of the society as well.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 2 Next, formulate a research question about the civil rights movement (historical time from 1954 – 1968), using the lens you've chosen.
What impact did Martin Luther Kind Jr’s non-violence and peaceful approach have on the Civil Rights Movement?
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 3 First, go back and review the research question you developed in Step 1. For Step 2, first name two different primary sources that you might use to answer that question. Be
as specific as you can. Your primary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library.
One primary source I can use is Martin Luther King’s famous I have a dream speech found in
the History Reference database of the Shapiro Library. This speech shows how he wished for a peaceful tomorrow. Another primary source I can use that is also found in the History Reference database is his letters from a Birmingham jail.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 4 Next, name two different secondary sources you could use to answer your research question. Again, be as specific as you can. Your secondary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library.
One secondary source I can use is a periodical entitled The Basics Remain the Same that tells
about Martin Luther King Jr. Another secondary source I can use is a biography about Martin
Luther King Jr. Both these sources will show the peaceful teachings of MLK through a different person’s perspective.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 5 Construct a thesis statement that provides an answer to the research question you posed
in Step 1. Base your response on the historical evidence that's been presented in this course so far, as well as any research you may have done on your own. Martin Luther King Jr had a great impact on the Civil Rights Movement by teaching peace through non-violent protests.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 6 Name three specific historical events that can be considered contributory causes of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Briefly explain why you believe each of these events contributed to the passage of the Act.
I feel that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 can be seen as a contributory cause due to the fact that
The Voting Rights Act could have passed in the future but the passing of the Civil Rights Act
absolutely helped speed the process up.
The arresting of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is also a contributory cause of the Voting Rights Act because he led a protest that highlighted the issues covered in this act.
The event known as "Bloody Sunday" is another contributory cause of the Voting Rights Act because this event shocked Congress so much that it helped push Congress into passing the Voting Rights Act.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 7 Based on what you read about the passage of the Voting Rights Act on Page 1 of this learning block, name one event that was part of the course
of this bill's passage by Congress.
President Johnson's speech calling for congress to uphold the Constitution is part of this bill's passing. In this speech President Johnson clearly states that the Constitution says no one should be denied the right to vote based on their race and that Congress needs to enforce this.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 8 Name three specific consequences caused by the passage of the Voting Rights Act.
