Elizabeth Teasley August 18, 2023 POLS 5010: Public Administration Instructor: Dr. Leah Pieper 1. What is the role of public administration in addressing crises such as this? The role of public administration in addressing crises such as the Flint water crisis is helping with a set strategy and organizing and communicating resources to people in the community. 2. What responsibility do different levels of government have for avoiding or managing a crisis such as this? Different government levels have the responsibility of making sure people in the community have the resources, through public services federal, state, and local governments are to work together to improve the challenges that occurred during the Flint water crisis. Local government should have worked with other government agencies to make sure the water quality was tested before switching and then not inform residents until over a year later. It showed poor judgment and because money was the issue, the federal agency should have stepped in and helped the people in the community and held everyone accountable for the actions that caused this crisis. 3. How does this case study demonstrate the differences between government and business? In some ways, government and business demonstrate the same work of public work, the only difference between government and business is the purpose of how the work is done and the context of how the work must be done. Stakeholders’ involvement surrounding the work process. Another difference is the profit when a profit cannot be sufficient in the interest of the business a lot of the work is left to the government to find solutions for the community. 4. Are the recent charges against the officials involved adequate to prevent such crises in the future? No, because there was no plan in place to review how to assess short-term and long-term priorities that would lead to another disaster. Business executives and governments tend to not engage with citizens and what matters in fixing the issues and have people who are involved in their communities help develop plans.
5. Thinking about the concepts in chapter 2, could opportunities for citizen engagement have prevented or helped manage this crisis? Why or why not? Yes, because citizens' engagement is important to helping with building communities and the collaborative efforts that need to exist between the government and the citizens. When you have citizens give their input, when citizens made complaints about the color of the water it was the government and organization's business to make sure that the citizens were taken care of, and it shouldn’t have taken as long as it did for the government to execute a state emergency. Many residents are exposed to harmful toxins.
