Drawing upon the materials outlined in Chapter One of Contending for the Constitution,
describe the unique qualifications of the Convention delegates. How did these unique
qualifications impact the contributions made? Do you believe there is evidence of divine
intervention? Why or why not?
Their qualifications were that they were educated, and God was at the forefront of their
decisions. They were very knowledgeable of the principles of the Bible, and they combined
biblical principles with politics which helped aid with the movement that they had at the time
delegates showed that they had higher intelligence and were willing to use all of their knowledge
to serve the betterment of the country. They also understood God which was at the forefront of
all of their decisions. They also had a strong understanding and experience of their country
because they had served in a war. They also had experience in writing legislative documents
which allowed them to be some of the most profound thinkers of their time. I do believe that this
is evidence of divine information because of the fact that at the time there was a lot of uproar and
there was a lot of disagreement among the colonies. With God using these men as a catalyst to
live a more godly life provided everybody a sense of relief.
Drawing upon the materials set forth in Chapter two of Contending for the Constitution,
explain how the issue of slavery was addressed at the Convention. What is the
discrepancy between “ending the slave trade” and “ending slavery” and what was the
impact of the federal/state division?
This was considered a big obstacle because people were opposed to slavery, but many people did
not believe that the government should deal with social and moral problems. Since the slave
trade was still active the national government could regulate this as commercial. It was insisted
that anti-slavery policies would be implemented immediately and also to invoke the immediate
termination of the slave trade because they feared the union leaving the United States rather than
the determination of slavery. If the union was to separate from the South, it would be easier for
other countries such as the European Union could come and take over. Also in God's eyes,
slavery is wrong. Ending the slave trade and ending slavery were two different things a lot of
people did not believe that slavery ended in 1808.
