The war between Russia and Ukraine officially began in February 2022 but previous
incidents also had impacted on the increasing tensions impacting the globe. In February 2022
Russian began a full invasion of Ukraine and as of March 2022 this caused at least 2.5 million
Ukrainians to flee. The European Union agreed to temporarily take in refugees without visas.
Liberalism is the best international relation approach to explain this action of the European
Union because Liberalism core concepts include cooperation, morals, and human rights.
Liberalism also holds the beliefs minimizing conflict by working together, positive view of human
nature, and peace. The European Union aiding in taking refugees is morally correct in helping
its neighbor through a time of crisis. In April 2022, the United States, European Union, and other
G-7 nations imposed sanctions on Russia in response to war crimes. The United States, the
European Union, and other countries imposing sanctions will hurt Russia economically and it
will lead to Russia not affording the war therefore Liberalism best explains the response
because liberalism beliefs relate with working together with allies to have prosperity, peace, and
minimize conflict and sanctions does that. Also in April 2022, China and India responded by
becoming the largest buyers of Russian oil. This action is best described by realism because
China and India are buying Russian oil because it’s cheap therefore, it's a win for them rather
than sanctioning Russia. Realism relates to the fact that human nature is competitive and selfish
and they are motivated by military power and security. China and India don’t share borders with
Ukraine and they both aren’t in NATO therefore they can do what’s in their best interest. In May
2022, Finland and Sweden attempted to join NATO membership. This response is best
described by liberalism because NATO is an alliance organization and getting into this
organization can benefit them with gaining alliances.
In June 2022, The European Union executive arm recommended putting Ukraine on a
path to membership which is another action that can be described with liberalism. Liberalism
can describe this because Liberalism focuses on alliances, cooperation,
and working together
can maximize prosperity and minimize conflict. Also, in June 2022 Ukraine received their first
delivery of heavy weapons from Germany. This action can again be seen as Liberalism because
Germany provided aid to their ally Ukraine against an immoral war. By November 2022, Poland
had taken nearly 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees but they were running out of money to support
them. This supportive action can be viewed as liberalism because Poland is being cooperative
and working with Ukraine and supporting the country in the time of crisis. In November 2022,
the United States continued to supply Ukraine with millions of dollars in weapons and had new
sanctions placed on Russia. The United States actions can be recognized as liberalism because
supplying weapons and sanctions both aid Ukraine in fighting against Russia and sanctions
negatively impact Russia’s economy affecting the funding of the war. Liberalism can be seen
extremely throughout the international relations and reactions of the Ukraine Russian war.
Ukraine is receiving extensive help with fighting back against immoral Russia.
Realism, Liberalism, Constructivism, Feminism, Marxism
Notes:
Realism: Different states have different power, no morals/ethics, where every man is out for his
own interests (human nature is selfish and competitive), power is central, alliances are
temporary and are only formed for the purpose of security, motivated by the desire for military
power and security rather than ethics and morals, doesn’t welcome change
Liberalism: Peace and prosperity, moral/ethics/values, trust allies/alliances, working together
can maximize prosperity and minimize conflict, democratic states = peace, non democratic =
conflict, positive view of human nature, human reason, cooperation
Constructivism: History, state identities are complex and changing and arise from interactions
with other states, what states find necessary or threatening can change, interactions shape
interests and how they are perceived and acted on
Feminism: Maybe the world would be different if more women occupied positions of power,
International relations focuses on war because men are very engaged in this subject, military
activities have traditionally been conducted by men so it is gendered activity. Don't assume
rationally, areas of the world with strict gender hierarchies are the least stable and poorest.
People's experiences are an important part of their identity. Understanding of power and
security is incomplete if we only incorporate male perspectives and experiences. Core concern:
security and cooperation. Major approach: expanding definitions to include everyone's
experiences, outlook: cautious optimism, central concept: gender, social hierarchy, and
inequality.
Marxism: Materialistic determination, economic issues, history is the result of material conditions
rather than ideas/ideals/beliefs. Class struggle. Classes are formed of groups of people as they
relate to their role to the production of goods. Wars happen because capitalism (originates
capitalist states), because war is economic. Lasting peace happens with the collapse of
capitalism, and the creation of a stateless and classless world. Competition. Colonialism.
