1: Introduction
With Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2014, the US has been a crucial actor in the ongoing war between the two countries. As tensions grow, the United States has come out in support of Ukraine, pledging military and economic help to the country. Russia invaded Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula on the Black Sea, in 2014 and began aiding separatist insurgents in eastern Ukraine. The United States has denounced Russia's actions and has subsequently imposed economic penalties on the nation, demanding it to withdraw its soldiers from Ukraine and respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity
.
The Ukrainian government claims that Russia's incursion violates international law as well as Ukraine's sovereignty. They have asked the international community, including the United States, to help them oppose Russian aggression and maintain their territorial integrity. Moscow claims that its efforts are in response to the maltreatment of Russian-
speaking Ukrainians and that it is merely delivering humanitarian help to separatist territories. They have accused the United States of meddling in the crisis and assisting the Ukrainian government's military activities. In conclusion, this essay will present an outline of the United States' approach toward the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, including its support for Ukraine and the imposition of economic sanctions against Russia. The article will next explore the reasons advanced by the Ukrainian government and Russia
in response to the invasion, as well as their different involvement in the conflict
.
2: Analysis-Part A
Since the end of World War II, ties between Russia and Ukraine have been difficult (New York Times, 2021). The Soviet Union took Crimea from Ukraine in 1954, escalating
tensions between the two countries. Russia grabbed Crimea in 2014 and began aiding separatist insurgents in eastern Ukraine, resulting in a lengthy confrontation (New York Times, 2021). The confrontation has resulted in worldwide censure of Russia's conduct, putting strain on the relationship between the two countries.
Ukraine now has a democratic administration, with a president serving as the head of state and a prime minister serving as the head of government (Washington Post, 2019). Volodymyr Zelensky was elected president of Ukraine in 2019 with more than 73% of the vote (Washington Post, 2019
). Zelensky is a former comedian and political newcomer who ran on a platform of combating corruption and increasing government openness.
Russia, on the other hand, is a semi-presidential federal republic with a president as
head of state and a prime minister as head of government (ABC News, 2021). Vladimir Putin has been Russia's president since 2000, having been elected for the first time in 2000 and served two consecutive terms before becoming Prime Minister for a period and then being reelected in 2012 and 2018. (ABC News, 2021). Putin is a former KGB operative who has dominated Russian politics for almost two decades.
Since the end of World War II, the relationship between the United States and the former Soviet Union has been fraught with tension and conflict (CBS News, 2021). During the Cold War, the two superpowers were embroiled in a nuclear weapons race, proxy conflicts in many nations throughout the world, and political and ideological disagreements. The final dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 led to a fundamental shift in the relationship between the two nations, with the U.S. emerging as the lone superpower (CBS News, 2021). Nonetheless, tensions between the United States and Russia have risen in recent years as a result of problems such as Moscow's annexation of Crimea, suspected intervention in US elections, and disagreements over weapons control
treaties (CBS News, 2021
). The relationship between the United States and the former Soviet Union has been characterized by tension and conflict, including the Cold War and the final collapse of the Soviet Union. Current conflicts have erupted as a result of a variety of factors. (CNN, New York Times, Washington Post, ABC News, and CBS News).
The Ukrainian government's arguments in response to Russia's invasion of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine have been thoroughly recorded in a number of official government pronouncements and announcements. The Ukrainian government claims that Russia's military action breaches international law as well as Ukraine's sovereignty as an independent state. The Russian seizure of Crimea and the accompanying armed confrontation in eastern Ukraine, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are "a clear breach of the norms of international law, notably the United Nations Charter, the Helsinki Final Act, and the Paris Charter" (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, 2022).
The Ukrainian government has also argued that the Russian Federation's activities violate the 1997 Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia. The pact preserves both governments' territorial integrity and sovereignty and binds them to refrain from using force against one another. The Ukrainian government claims that Russia violated the pact by invading and annexing Crimea and backing rebel troops in eastern Ukraine (The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, 2014).
Russia, on the other hand, has advanced many justifications for its conduct in Ukraine. The Russian administration has argued that annexing Crimea was required in reaction to the Ukrainian government's alleged mistreatment of the region's Russian-
speaking people. The Kremlin has also asserted that it has a responsibility to safeguard ethnic Russians in Ukraine against discrimination and persecution at the hands of the Ukrainian government (The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, 2022).
