Kaitlyn Avard Naomi Estrada CJ 315 October 29 th , 2023 Journal Victims’ Rights How did victims’ rights evolve? o Victims' rights have evolved drastically with the help of Civil rights and the women’s rights movement. Before the victim rights movement, they had truly little rights. If victims were harmed, they had to fight for justice, often through retaliation. Former President Regan established the National Victim Rights. After this was established, many programs started to help victims. What were the key social movements of the 1960s and 1970s that impacted victims’ rights? o During the 1960s and 1970s, there were two main key social movements. One is the civil movement, and the other is the women's rights movement. They both had a significant impact on the victim's rights. Most that took part in the movement were women who were victims. What are the victims’ rights that are common across all states? o The common rights are to be treated with fairness, sensitivity, respect, and dignity. The right to be present at criminal proceedings. The right to be heard in the criminal process. The right to be informed at proceedings. The right to be protected from intimidation and harassment. The right to privacy and the right to restitution from the offender.
Consider your state’s victims’ bill of rights. How are victims’ rights today effective or not effective at protecting victims from further harm and providing them with restitution? Provide one example and support your response with appropriate resources. o They are effective and not effective. One thing that sticks out to me is that officers who kill can use victim rights laws to stay anonymous. This is one that I believe is not effective. I personally think that they should be public since other offenders are also known to the public. Lartey, J. (2023, September 9). When police kill and use victims’ rights laws to stay anonymous .
