Module 6 Short Responses – Question 1
Which source will you analyze using active reading strategies? Include the name of the
article, the author, the publication, the date, and where you found it.
Read your chosen source using the active reading strategies you learned on the previous
page. Then, summarize the overall meaning and content of the reading. Write your
summary below. Your summary should be at least one paragraph long.
For my secondary source relating to my essay, I chose to review "Political Disengagement
and the death of Martin Luther King by Richard Hofstetter. I found this article on Shapiro
Library. I went into this article looking for specific information relating to how Dr. King's
death impacted the political views of the general public during that time period. In this
article, Hofstetter explains that there was an electoral survey happening in Ohio at the time
and the assassination happened halfway through. They were then able to compare data from
before and after and see how this event in history altered the political environment and notate
any changes. They found that whites were not overly impacted or changed but the
assassination drastically shifted the African American views on the political system.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 2
What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-
1970s? Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was a
contributory cause of the Boston busing crisis.
1. The Brown V. Board of Education. This paved the way for desegregated schools.
2. Civil Rights Movement. This increased the racial tensions of the area.
3. Racial Imbalance Act. This made segregated schools illegal and threatened funding if
schools did not comply.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three specific consequences of the Boston
busing crisis.
1. White Flight. Demographics show a dramatic drop in white students and overall white
population in the area through the years after.
2. First African American mayoral candidate. This showed the racial tensions were cooling
and that the area was moving past the busing crisis.
3. The removal of the school committee. This marked the end of the segregation era.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 4
Describe one cause of the event you have chosen for your historical analysis (keeping in
mind that there are many), and explain one piece of evidence from your research that
you will use to support this assertion. Describe one consequence of the event, and
explain one piece of evidence from your research that you will use to support this
assertion.
I chose for my historical analysis the impact that Martin Luther King Jr had on the Civil
Rights Movement and the societal view of that movement. A cause I have chosen is Brown V.
Board of education and other court rulings of that time period that allowed segregation to
thrive in the southern states. This inequality lead Dr. King on his path in the movement and to
his March on Washington. A consequence of Dr. King's actions lead to his assassination. In
my secondary sources, this impact can be shown in electoral leanings and political affiliations
both before the event and the changes after.
