Module 5 The Middle East Discussion Questions
1.
What was the most surprising or interesting topic in this module? Why was it the most surprising or interesting to you?
It would definitely be that so much of the Middle East’s past events and history directly effects their people’s daily functions in life. As well as how many issues have been ongoing
within their countries for so long with no solution.
2. Given the U.S.’ involvement in the Middle East and many conflicts there, what would do you think might be useful ways for the U.S. to try to change its relationship with the region or particular countries in the region? Why might your ideas help?
The U.S. involvement in the Middle East has been complex and multifaceted, encompassing various strategic, economic, and security interests. To change its relationship with the region or specific countries, the U.S. could consider useful approaches such as Investment in Regional Stability, Transparency, Consistency, Cultural and Educational Exchange, etc. By implementing these approaches, the U.S. can work towards building a more positive and cooperative relationship with the countries in the Middle East, fostering greater stability and security in the region.
2.
Given what you saw in the videos about the Arab Spring and the reading on this topic, why do you think most of these efforts led by young people trying
to create real democracy in their countries failed? What lessons could be learned from these failures?
The importance of building consensus around the principles and contours of democracy
cannot be underestimated. Democracies thrive when there is a broad-based consensus on
the fundamental values and principles that underpin them. Countries should strive to foster a culture of dialogue, compromise, and cooperation among diverse stakeholders to ensure the success of democratic transitions.
4. If you were the woman who made the film “For Sama”, what would you want to teach your children as they grew up? What advice would you give to other parents caught in this type of conflict, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine?
Overall, my hope would be to teach my children the importance of standing up for what is right, while also taking care of themselves and seeking out support from others when needed. I would want to encourage other parents in similar situations to prioritize their own well-being and to continue to advocate for their families and communities.
