The Southern Border Crisis
The Southern Border Crisis
2
The ongoing crisis at the Southern Border in the United States demands immediate attention, compelling the need for a thorough and transformative overhaul. The ongoing strain on border enforcement officers, coupled with the challenges faced by humanitarian workers amidst complex immigration issues, underscores the urgency for fortified border security measures and a fundamental restructuring of immigration policies. Despite multi-level government efforts spanning several years, marked by an intensified focus on stringent border enforcement and persistent attempts to reform well-
established immigration policies, the border crisis demands a more assertive and innovative approach to
bring about substantial and sustainable change.
The Southern Border Crisis
3
Immigration at the southern border has been a growing concern to many Americans over many years now. Two competing solutions to the border policy have been the effort to enforce strict border enforcement while others have been fighting to reform the immigration policies. Enforcing strict border enforcement will have a toll on the border enforcement officers working long hours, construction of physical barriers, greater surveillance and a zero-tolerance policy on illegal entries. Reforming the immigration policies will require lawmakers to find a way to allow illegal immigrants a way to attain legal
status while fixing the legal immigration process. One solution to the Southern Border crisis is to tighten up and become stricter on border enforcement. This is easier said than done and requires lawmakers at every level of the government to work together and produce solutions that will work best moving forward. The federal governments involvement would be by through the allocation of funds for physical barriers, surveillance equipment and they must coordinate this with the state and local authorities. The state and local governments will work with the federal agencies to address border challenges while working on joint operations. The Executive branch of government can implement strict border measures while exercising executive orders to strengthen the immigration policies. The Legislative Branch will need to pass laws to strengthen border security while distributing funding for border enforcement. The Judicial Branch is also
involved in strict border enforcement by ruling on cases that are related to border security and immigration. Senator Cruz of Texas introduced the Secure the Border Act that “includes a comprehensive plan to secure the U.S.-Mexico border by investing resources in both border and interior enforcement” (

2023). The Act calls for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to continue building the border wall, incentive for border patrol officers to stay in the way of pay incentives, require migrants to enter the country through a port of entry, streamlines screenings and family unifications as stated in the Senate Republicans working group solutions for the southern border (

2023). As stated before, all levels of the government must work together to make stricter border enforcement a reality.
While many Americans want stricter border enforcement some argue that reforming the immigration policies could help improve the crisis that is taking place on our Southern border. On October 30, 2023, President Biden issued an Executive Order for the use of Artificial intelligence (AI) at the border and by January 28, 2023, “The Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security are required to take steps to streamline visa processing times.”(Lurie & Aliaskari, 2023). Some lawmakers are also calling for reform because they feel it is more humane, respects human rights and addresses issues that are unfolding due to the crisis. For reform to work the Federal Government must lead immigration policy reform efforts and disperse funds for a streamlined immigration process. State and local Governments need to support the federal laws while staying engaged with their communities and enforcing laws at their level. The Executive Branch will oversee the immigration reform while identifying and working through humanitarian concerns. The Legislative Branch will need to pass laws on immigration reforms and ensure funding is provided for reform policy execution. The Judicial Branch will
rule on cases related to the immigration policies and on cases that challenge the reform policies as well. Immigration policies will evolve forever as the landscape and conditions of the country and world will always be changing making immigration reform policies tough to perfect.
When it comes to the Southern Border crisis a blend of border policy reform and tightening up border security enforcement will be the way to go. Compromise by both sides need to come together and realize that they will never get everything that they want, but if they prioritize their most critical
