Option 2:
There are many social movement parties all with different agendas. These include but are not limited to women's rights, LGBTWQ rights, Religion, Black
Lives Matter, and Financial Movements. Some are reasonably disruptive and some are violent. Disruption includes protests, media coverage that bring light to issues, while creating an impact. Bringing light to important issues creates excitement which causes mobilization of support and most importantly political pressure.
The Occupy Wall Street Movement of 2011 incorporated many diverse people and agendas. (Greenberg & Page, 2018, p.210). This included the failure of the government to make change in wealth inequality, student loan debt and the poor standard of living. Their focus was on the assistance the government gives to big financial institutions such as the ones on Wall Street. This was disruptive but not violent. (Greenberg & Page, 2018, p.126)
The Tea Party is a group that developed after President Obama's election. They were driven by anger about illegal immigration, government involvement in everyday life, and much more. Most rage was directed at programs that support immigrants or “undeserving people”. (Greenberg & Page, 2018, p. 126) Besides this they had similar complaints of those of the Occupy Wall Street Movements such as the issue with bank bailouts. April 15, 2009 the movement took place all over the country. The goal of the movement was to lower taxes, limit Obama's presidency, limit government's involvement in citizens' lives (such as the health insurance mandate).
The first amendment of the Bill of Rights is the freedom of Religion, Speech, Press, Right to Peacefully Assemble and Right to Petition. This indicates that protesting is a fundamental right of the US Citizens. Protesting is legal and encouraged if it is peaceful. Citizens are also allowed to speak freely. This is under the assumption that the speech is just and truthful. (U.S. Constitution- First Amendment)
An example of disruptive behaviors was that of January 6th, 2021, also referred to as the Stop the Steal Protest. (Das, 2023) Maybe this is not a social movement in the traditional sense, but this was a movement fueled by
the belief that the election was unjust. The social movement is that of the Right-Wing It was stated that President Donald Trump incited these riots. It is
now said as of 2023 that he engaged in insurrection. This is a violent uprising
against the government, and as a government official, according to the 14th amendment section 3, he is unable to run for office again. (U.S. Constitution).
Each state will be able to determine this on their own. If they determine that he cannot be on the ballot, then he cannot win the Primary.
There are negative consequences to a violent protest, this is why the Bill of Rights states peaceful protesting is legal, while violent is not. Negative
consequences can be that of the mental health of those involved. It is also referred to as an attack on Democracy, as well as on the police officers who serve to protect the democracy. This is because those who feel attacked, whether left or right winged, feel disempowered. They feel that their right to equality and justice is not being met. (Das, 2023) Protestors who are violent, even those who are not, face arrests, fines and even injury.
Drawbacks to disruptive social movements include backlash. This can be in many forms including social media. Media coverage which is good or bad can
be beneficial in promoting a cause, but it can also be hurtful. When there is backlash, oftentimes the movements lose their momentum, people begin to get scared or begin to believe the movement is a nuisance. Members who disagree with the disruptive tactics may cause division within the group, as described in lesson 3. This is evidenced by the Black Panther Movement and Martin Luther King Jr. (Lesson 3) If and when violent parties hurt or disturb innocent people, oftentimes they are no longer taken seriously. People get upset and do not support these movements. Less support results in less political pressure.
The paper,
Mental health symptoms following the January 6th attack on the United States capitol,
used the example of Jesse Jackson's presidential candidate in 1988. They stated that this representation of African American communities positively affected the mental and physical health of African American Citizens. Conversely, after the January 6th riots, negatively affected the mental and physical health of Latinx citizens. (Das, 2023)
According to Sokolow (2021), 70,000 people were banned from twitter after the January 6th events. They had all been involved in the conspiracy to storm the Capitol. I wonder if this is a violation of their freedom of speech? Twitter is a privately owned social media platform, which therefore has the right to remove anyone that they wish to.
