Following this end of the Cold War, North Korea ran into a geopolitical shift as it lost the support it had received from the Soviet Union. The loss of supports led to economic crisis within North Korea and
exaggerated the already strenuous conditions and economic situation. The Cold War alliances were played out on the Korean peninsula, with North Korea being supported by the Soviet Union, and South Korea being supported the United States. The Korean War ended in an armistice in 1953, because of not ending in a peace treaty North Korea ideals of isolation became deeper rooted. However, North Koreas ideals of isolation and self-reliance didn’t help North Koreas economy. The nuclear goals of North Korea added even more complexity to the situation, the US and other nations have attempted to end North Koreas nuclear program. In 1994, when North Korea announced its intent to withdraw from the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty). Following the North Koreas intention of withdrawing from the NPT, it prompted international concern, and in response diplomatic efforts began. These efforts attempted to prevent North Korea from further advancing its nuclear capabilities. Despite these efforts there was still growing tensions in the region. The combination of diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, and deterrence strategies have prevented North Korea from conducting full scale military operation on the Korean peninsula. North Korea has been deterred; the Alliance strategy has worked so well that today the idea of North Korea attempting to reunite the peninsula will be incredibly difficult. It was Henry Kissinger’s “Absolute Security Theory” highlights the contradiction in seeking absolute security. According to his theory, “when one state seeks absolute security, it inevitably undermines the security of
others” (Perlstein, 2024). The security dilemma that the US faces with North Korea emphasizes the challenges and complications of seeking security through military means. Kissinger’s theory highlights the need for a better approach that considers the interconnected nature of security in the international system. NVCC
