2 In this paper I will be researching and discovering how the politicians who represent me vote and what interests they have to better understand how they align with Christian values. The goal is to become an informed voter as I am almost old enough to vote. I will be going over both the voting habits of a state senator and a house representative from my district. My state of West Virginia has two state senators, the senator we will talk about is Joe Manchin III. We will go through each persons education, work experience, and political backgrounds. Joe Manchin III graduated from West Virginia University in 1970 with a BA in Business Administration. He is an experienced owner of Enersystems Incorporated and his namesake Manchin’s Carpet Center. Manchin has quite the political experience to back him up. He was a Delegate for the WV House of Delegates from 1982-1986, a senator for the WV state senate from 1986-1996, and the secretary of state for the State of West Virginia. Joe Manchin III ran for Governor of WV in 1996, 2004, and 2008. He became Governor of WV for 5 years from 2005-2010. After his term was over as Governor Manchin ran for U.S. Senate representative for WV in 2010, 2012, 2018. Joe Manchin III has been the Senator for WV from 2010 to the present day. (The Voter’s Self Defense System, 2019) The representative for the 2 nd congressional district of West Virginia in the U.S House of Representatives is Alex Mooney. Mooney has a BA in philosophy from Dartmouth College and graduated in 1993. He was an aide to Maryland Congressman Roscoe Bartlett from 1993-1995. He then became a legislative analyst for the House Republican Conference Committee under chairman John Boehner in the year 1995. Alex was the vice-president and legislative analysis for

3 the Council for National Policy Action, Incorporated, from 1995-1998. After a 7-year hiatus Mooney became the Executive Director for The National Journalism Center from the years 2005- 2012. He also hosted his own radio show called “The Alex Mooney Radio Show” from 2011- 2013. Unlike our other representatives he has a relatively small list of political experience. Alex Mooney was the Senator for Maryland State Senate, District 3 from 1999-2011. Mooney then became a Representative for the U.S House of Representatives for WV District 2 four years later in 2015 and has that title in the present-day. (The Voter’s Self Defense System, 2019) The 2 nd Congressional District continues to vote republican, and we have done so since 2000 with our current representative being Alex Mooney, a republican. Alex Mooney has helped put forth many bills during his time in office. (West Virginia, n.d.) One of which is the Abortion Funding Awareness Act of 2024 which requires states to report information on Medicaid payments to abortion providers. The goal of this bill is to track federal and state funds going towards abortion. (Legislative search results | congress.gov | library of Congress) Biblically, we as Christians know that abortion is a sin and the taking of an innocent life is murder. Christians are aware that we are fearfully and wonderfully made according to Psalm 139:14. (Bible, 2000) This verse applies in all stages of life, from conception to death. Another bill Mooney helped put forth is bill H.R.7183. The PROTECTS Act of 2024 prohibits federal funds from being used to provide certain gender transition procedures to minors. (Congress.gov | Library of Congress) The Bible states that God created us each perfectly and without error, “God created man in his own image. Genesis 1:27”. (Bible, 2000) The third bill introduced with the help of Alex Mooney prohibits funding for the United Nations Human Rights Council until it condemns Hamas, a terrorist organization located in Israel.
