The Olympics of International Financial Institutions’ Projects
Gold Medal:
National Rural Livelihoods Project, India - World Bank
The World Bank's National Rural Livelihoods Project (NRLP) aims to establish efficient and effective institutional platforms for the rural poor, enabling them to increase household income through sustainable livelihood enhancements and improved access to financial and selected public services (World Bank, 2021).
Positive Impact: The NRLP has reached millions of rural women, forming self-help groups that provide a mechanism for savings, loans, and social action. These groups led to increased incomes and empowerment (World Bank, 2021). It could have been more impactful if it had a stronger focus on scaling up access to markets for the products and services produced by these women.
Negative Impact: While negative impacts are not reported in large scale, there might have been some unintended consequences like increased indebtedness due to easy access to credit. Greater financial literacy training could have mitigated this.
Silver Medal:
The Renewable Energy Program, Morocco - African Development Bank
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has been instrumental in Morocco's Renewable Energy Program, aiming to produce 42% of the country's energy needs from renewable sources by 2020 (AfDB, 2018).
Positive Impact: The program has enhanced energy security, created jobs, and reduced CO2 emissions. It could have been even more impactful if it had a concurrent training and skill development program in renewable energy to create more local jobs.
Negative Impact: Some displacement of local communities occurred during the construction of solar plants (Benabdallah & Dinar, 2020). This could have been avoided with better planning and
engagement with local communities to minimize disruption.
Bronze Medal:
Central Asia South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-
1000) - Asian Development Bank
The Asian Development Bank's CASA-1000 project is a landmark electricity transmission project aiming to create a regional electricity market between Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (Asian Development Bank, 2014).
