Part I: Putting politics aside, how should the United States best address immigration now?
Immigration has been one of the toughest and most controversial topics for the past couple of years especially after 9/11. The current ideas of immigration are largely concerned with border control, unlawful labor, law enforcement concerns, human rights, the economy, the environment,
national security, and a multitude of other factors. The U.S. was primarily built on immigration and benefits from globalization, so closing our borders would be unjust. Along with providing better opportunities to people in need, the U.S. can benefit from the contributions of those people. Welcoming new immigrants into our nation will provide vital skills to the U.S. economy and allow American culture to preserve its great diversity, which attracts international relationships. People all across the world will respect and admire the U.S. if it continues its historic heritage of providing opportunity and sanctuary to immigrants.
From a personal experience of watching a friend go through the tiring process for months to get her loved one citizenship was heartbreaking to see. The lack of communication, disorganization, and inefficiency of the process was beyond disappointing. After learning more about immigration, I realized that the process of becoming a citizen in the U.S. needed a reformation. The U.S. currently has significant visa wait times, with much longer wait times for permanent resident visas. To address this problem, the U.S. should create a system that accelerates the application process and screens process. Applicants seeking asylum, who have small children, need medical care, and/or have family members who are American-born should be given priority. The lengthy process of immigration plays a major part in illegal immigration. Now I’m all for immigration, but with everything in this world, there should be limitations.
Part II: What about in the next five years? (Note: there should be NO discussion of political parties).
In my opinion, with the way things are now, I don’t see a change happening within the next five years. Lawmakers can’t seem to get on the same page concerning any immigration policy. A five-year timeframe isn’t enough to fix this confusion.
Part III: What about the next ten years? (Note: there should be NO discussion of political parties).
In the next ten years, the topic of immigration should be in full control in all concerns. Policies should be well beyond effective for the American people, the economy, national security, and immigrants. To strengthen national security and the administration of immigration laws, the U.S.
should use cutting-edge technology to modernize the immigration system. I would hope to see development or at least improvement to immigration policies and processes. With reformation to the policies and processes, illegal immigration should be dropping at a high rate. Along with the process of streamlining, there should be better border control to stop the influx of illegal immigrants. With stronger borders, this will cut down on illegal immigration majorly. All who illegally entered should be given a way to become legal citizens unless there are reasons why they shouldn’t be allowed to stay. Every couple of years, immigrants should have their applications and background reviewed to ensure they aren’t abusing the policies. If so, they should be removed. Overall, by analyzing the flaws in present immigration policies and
implementing reforms, you can ensure that proper actions are developed to improve immigration and decrease risks to the U.S.
