Part I: How should the United States government deal with the heightened concern about homegrown violent extremism and the growing concern for the preservation of civil liberties? From domestic violent extremists to cybercriminals, the United States continues to face a variety of significant and developing dangers. The Department of Homeland Security faces major difficulties in staying on top of these dangers. To deal with homegrown violent extremism, I believe more people should step up and report those activities along with government surveillance. There should be stricter laws against homegrown extremism and domestic terrorism which could potentially shrike fear and stop threats before they began. Regarding the concern of the violation of civil liberties, it is due to the lack of knowledge of the rights of the population. The laws should permit the government to infringe on citizens' privacy rights to keep them safe. The government should educate the public about the causes for violations as well as the necessity of obtaining information early to avoid threats. The administration should give information from the prior operations to show how successful these measures are. Part II: What are the political and constitutional consequences of counter-terrorism? The consequence of counter-terrorism besides the violations of civil liberties is fear from citizens with a lack of trust in the government. To tackle domestic terrorism, the federal government should shift its forces. It is a necessary rethinking since counter-terrorism efforts are centered on radicalization will only make people fearful and live in fright. As a result, they will either refuse to help with law enforcement or offer inaccurate intelligence, both of which might harm the country. To create confidence and prevent panic episodes that might disrupt established security processes, Homeland Security must treat everyone equally while collecting data. As a result, such regulations must be revised to improve national security efficiency at this vital moment. Part III: Lastly, how do we assess the tradeoffs between freedom and security?  This topic will forever be seen as controversial. In my opinion, no one’s freedom is more important than the security of the nation as a whole. I don’t believe you keep an entire nation safe without the infringement of privacy. It will not get better unless the population is educated on the need for infringement and violation of civil liberties. References Benson, B. P.
