1. What is the connection between fascism and totalitarianism?
There are distinctions between fascism and totalitarianism despite the fact that the two
types of regimes share many characteristics and are relatively similar. Totalitarianism advocates
complete and utter respect for the state while claiming complete control over every aspect of
society. Fascism is distinct from totalitarianism in that its leaders frequently emphasize that their
country's identity—which is typically associated with a specific race or ethnicity—is that of the
"master race" or "master nation."

5. In what respect is nationalism a middle ground for fascists?
Individualism and internationalism are viewed as alternatives to the fascist ideology of
nationalism, as articulated by Mussolini. The idea of the nationalists' shared interest, which the
fascists valued, ran counter to the idea of individualism's particular interest, which is unique to
some forms of individualism. Mussolini claimed that nationalism served the interests of every
citizen of the state thus making nationalism a middle ground that rejected the ideas of
individualism and internationalism.

7. How does Gaetano Salvemini explain fascism?
According to our book, “
Italian historian Gaetano Salvemini pointed out that fascism’s
lack of theoretical clarity meant that fascists could often confuse both supporters and opponents.
Neither necessarily knew what to expect from newly installed fascist regimes, Salvemini
asserted. Exiled from Italy 3 years after Mussolini’s assumption of power, Salvemini came to
conclude that fascists could be understood by their actions, if not by their ideological
propositions.” (pg. 135)
8. Under the Nazis, concentration camps served varying functions. What were these functions
