Date of Event: 9/30/2022
Chapter/reading/video: Chapter 3
1.
Describe the event itself (what, when, who, where, why).
-
In this article it talks about how the House of Representatives has it’s fairest mapping
despite the recent gerrymandering that has been going on. Political power has said to be
disconnected from public opinion, and that gerrymandering of congressional districts would
be near the top of the list as to why it is. It states that Republican parties have been
especially aggressive and ignore court orders.
2.
To what concept, theory, historical or contemporary event described in the assigned material for
this class is this event related?
Explain and reference the text, readings and or videos including
page numbers, points in the video, etc.
-
Gerrymandering has been a real issue in American Democracy for a long time. It is especially
a problem when they are in the process of drawing state legislature districts. In the early
1990s, the Supreme Court had set down rulings in Shaw vs. Reno in 1993 and Miller vs.
Johnson in 1995 that rules that race based gerrymandering was unconstitutional. They didn’t
technically ban gerrymandering altogether just race based gerrymandering, so they could
still practice it if it wasn’t seen as a race-based choice. However, it continues to this day,
especially within the republican party. This article proved that it was still continuing within
that party but stated that it was not a top issue as it used to be in the past. They talk about
how Republicans have a structural edge within the house, but it doesn’t overshadow the
Democratic party anymore.
3.
In what ways is this event consistent with the arguments made in the text?
In what ways does it
contradict or challenge points made in the text?
-
Gerrymandering in the book is described as a set of processes by which elected politicians
redraw and manipulate the borders of political districts to secure a political advantage. I
think it is still prevalent today especially with everything that has happened in recent years
with covid 19, and the whole Trump debacle and trying to impeach his during his years as
president. As well as everything that happened during the last election. However, the article
is stating that gerrymandering is finally becoming less of an issue within the government
than it has in the past.
4.
Why did you select this event?
(Answering “because it’s related to chapter X or because it’s an
assignment” will earn 0 points for this section.
Select an event that means something to you
and be ready to explain what that is.)
-
I chose this article because gerrymandering really stuck out to me. I didn’t know that
it was even something that politicians did because I don’t delve into politics much
and it was something new, I learned. I think politics in our society are so corrupt that
I don’t want to dive too deeply into it and learning this proved my point on how our
system is corrupt and how politicians will do things like gerrymandering just so they
have an advantage over its people instead of it being fair.
5.
What do you believe will be the implications of this event?
In other words, what will likely come
next as a result of this event? Think in terms of other events likely to follow, policy changes,
responses from legislators, judges, administrators, or individuals affected in some way by the
event itself.
-
This article is more of an informational one, that tells us that Gerrymandering is a
becoming a smaller problem than it has been in the past and that the House of
Representatives has finally gotten its fairest map they have seen in 40 years. It is
very positive news that this is finally becoming a smaller issue and hopefully things
will continue this way to be fairer in the future. Hopefully now that this is becoming
more equal throughout, they can focus on other issues that are happening in the
government.
