UNIT 6 DISCUSSION
1.
How would US politics be different if we adopted a
proportional representation voting system like Germany,
New Zealand (found in the textbook) or Ireland (found in the
Radiolab episode)?
2.
How would the pattern of representation change in US
politics and what change might we expect in political
culture as a result?
Honestly I believe that changing our now voting system to a proportional
voting system would be much better. Because the way we vote now (pardon
my French) really sucks. With things like the popular vote that don't seem to
count unlike the electoral vote, which I think messes things up. For as long as
I can remember it seems like when we had the chance to put the better
person in the White House with the popular vote they seem to lose with it
matters and the electoral vote.
Even though we vote it don't seem as if our vote counts. Like I mentioned
above the national popular vote does not decide who will be in the White
House, the presidency is decided by the Electoral College. Which is an
outdated convoluted system that sometimes yields results contrary to the
major of American voters. With using proportional representation voting
system every vote does really matter. This way of voting has already been
implemented in some cities and states, but not used when voting federally or
for a president. It is written in our Constitution to vote the way we do, but
that's one of the greatest things about our Constitution we can amend it. It
may be a process but in the end well worth it.
Being that we are a very large country with so many citizens it may take a
little longer to count to the votes. But strictly sticking to paper ballots will
help ensure our voting system doesn't get hacked like in the 2016 elections.
Yes using proportional representation voting system would change the way
we pick who is in what office. I don't see that as a bad thing. When it comes
down to it we have to vote for either a Republican or a Democratic
candidate. But changing our voting system would change our choices in who
we vote for. If there is an independent or 2 democratic candidates we like
rather than the republican (like when Ross Perot or when Hilary and Biden
ran) our vote would actually count towards who we really wanted in office.
And if our first choice doesn't have enough votes then our second choice
then gets our vote, and so on so fourth.
Changing the way we vote we actually could put a women in the White
House. Men have ran our country over 2 centuries and like what good that
has done us. Why not try someone different besides middle aged or older
white men (Obama being the exception).
