Narcissistic Personality Disorder An Overview
What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder? Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others
Assessment of NPD The diagnosis of NPD is conducted by trained mental health professionals who use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a guide. It involves a comprehensive psychiatric interview, self- report measures, and observation of behavior (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
Is NPD Genetically Inherited? Current research suggests a moderate genetic influence on NPD. Twin studies indicate that genetic factors account for approximately 50% of the variance in narcissistic traits (Eaton, 2019).
Environme ntal Factors in NPD Alongside genetic predispositions, environmental factors also significantly contribute to the development of NPD. These factors can include childhood experiences such as excessive pampering, extremely high expectations, abuse or neglect, and variations in parenting styles. In some cases, an oversensitive temperament at birth, excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback, or unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents can also lead to NPD (Cale & Lilienfeld, 2002).
Neurological Correlates of NPD NPD has been associated with abnormalities in the regions of the brain related to empathy, compassion, emotional regulation, and aggression. Also, certain neurochemical imbalances, especially in serotonin levels, might contribute to NPD (Schulze et al., 2013).
