A culturally empathetic stance is required when asking the client to recount what happened in class (Collins, 2018). This is particularly important since this client is experiencing fear and shame after the public humiliation. The client may also be experiencing a sense of shame by letting down their family. As a counsellor, I would engage in cultural inquiry to understand how the client’s cultural and contextual factors influence their feelings in this situation. A better understanding of the client’s cultural identity can help with providing culturally appropriate interventions to reduce their distress and encourage them to attend classes. Moreover, individuals from ethnic minorities are more likely to be sensitive to rejection cues, and research suggests that promoting a strong sense of their heritage culture can increase resiliency when exposed to rejection cues (Vaswani et al., 2020). Some items from the Vancouver Index of Acculturation (VIA) by Ryder et al. (2000) can be used to assess the client’s cultural identity and their sense of confidence in their heritage culture. This can provide insight into the client’s sense of clarity and identification with their heritage and mainstream cultures (Vaswani et al., 2020). References: Collins, S. (Ed.). (2018).
