ETHICS IN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS 1 Ethics in Psychological Assessments Paper Javia Archelle Grand Canyon University CNL: 523 Dr. Darius Cooper May 1, 2024
ETHICS IN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS 2 Ethics in Psychological Assessments Paper Ethical codes and practices for the counseling field include a collection of considerations that professionals should follow to ensure the protection and safety of themselves as well as all clients. Ethics are inclusive of moral qualities and key ethical guidelines that incorporate empathy, confidentiality, informed consent, professional competence, and moral decision- making (Landford & Chism, 2023). Ethical codes are suggested standards of conduct that illustrate the foundation of what professional values, behaviors, and decision-making should consist of and resemble. Mental health professionals have an ethical duty to remain by and adhere to the code of ethics presented by the American Counselors Association to promote the well-being and protection of their clients and uphold their professional qualifications and expectations. Ethical standards and guidelines not only protect against maltreatment and law- enforced repercussions due to violations of these standards for mental health professionals but most importantly ensure the protection and best treatment experience for prospective and current clients. Ethical, Multicultural, and Diversity Issues Mental health professionals may commonly find themselves faced with complex ethical dilemmas and issues that present themselves in the counseling workspace, so mental health professionals need to equip themselves and prime their knowledge on the guidelines and ethical codes that review methods of how these issues can appropriately and effectively be handled. With consideration of our current societal advancements and the prevalence of the ability to now provide therapeutic services through online platforms, counselors are presented with a grander obligation to ensure the maintenance of ethical standards and guidelines are consistent and

According to the ACA Code of Ethics (2014), ethical standards should be upheld by counselors in all settings, including traditional, hybrid, and/or online formats, and they are to serve as role models for professional behavior. Primary ethical codes to highlight when providing online services include avoiding dual relationships with clients, protecting client confidentiality, and maintaining boundaries. Protecting the confidentiality of clients through online platforms can provide more of a challenge given the increase in risk of database breaches. Counselors should pay special attention to the means of protection set in place when providing online services to ensure maximum client protection and privacy. Multicultural and diversity issues may also present themselves in the therapeutic workspace. When determining appropriate assessment and testing tools for clients, it is critical to consider factors that may not be inclusive of individual diversity and multicultural inclusion, meaning that some assessment tools may not be appropriate for use based on the uniqueness and cultural identity of the client. Section E Standard 8 of the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) clarifies that counselors should exercise their competence in multiculturalism and diversity when determining assessment usage by recognizing the effects of aspects such as individual age, race, culture, language preference, spirituality, disability, and other diversity factors. Examples of multicultural and diversity issues in counseling include stereotyping clients, cultural discrimination, and cultural bias. Ways that counselors can avoid multicultural and diversity incompetence by making the effort to educate themselves, acknowledge and respect individual differences, become aware of personal biases, and refrain from incorporating them into the client-counselor therapeutic relationship (Writers, 2022).
