A. The video that I watched was Using Uno Cards to Engage in Fitness Activities. The case number is 28. A1. In the video the class that I observed the approximate age of the students in the physical education class are between 6 and 7 years old. The grade level of the classroom is 1 st grade. The population of the classroom is 18 students all together, 9 boys and 9 girls that make up the 18 students. In this classroom all of the students are white, the school is rural farming school district. In the classroom and from observing I can see that there are some students that have strong math comprehension and other students that struggles a little more with math concepts. In this activity using Uno Cards to Engage in Fitness activity math concepts are incorporated into this physical education lesson. A2. The development stage that was demonstrated in the video is Arnold Gesell’s stages of physical development. Physical development in Gesell’s stages is between the ages of 6 to 10 years old. It fits with the 1 st grade physical education class because they range from 6 to 7 years of age which is middle childhood. The lesson focused on physical activity that is working on their gross motor skills, they are also working on their math skills because they are using uno cards they are also using multiplication, and adding math concepts as well to know how many exercises they are supposed to be doing. 2a. The age of the students in the video fall into the category of Gesell’s stage of physical development because they are in middle childhood where children begin to participate in organized sports as their coordination skills advance as they get older. The lesson that the teacher was teaching was activities that helped with their math skills but it is an activity that is improving balance and endurance since they the students are in a physical education class. 2b . An example from the video that demonstrated that it aligns with Gesell’s physical development of middle childhood stage is that the students were using the skill of individualized skill learning. Individualized skill learning was demonstrated in the video because Mrs. Miller the teacher she gave instruction on what was to happen in the activity. The students were also able to use social interactions because they were able to get up and exercise in a group setting depending on the Uno card that was picked up. This was not an activity that needed to done independently. 3. The learning theory that I observed in the video that aligns with the teacher’s approach is the Humanistic theory. 3a . One example of the instructional strategy that the teacher used in the video was talking about human integrity. Human integrity not wanting the students to cheat if they ended up picking up an Uno card that they already did they were not to put it back and pick up a different card just because they did not want to do that exercise again since there are two different choices they can pick from. There was also emotionally and socially safety in the classroom because the teacher set out instruction on how the
students were to behave when it comes to the activity. You can see that when she dismisses the students to pick up a uno card instead of having them all go at once she excused the students by using their birthday month when they can go pick up their Uno card. 3b . Humanistic theory aligns with the lesson because the students were able to use there physical ability that they already had. The teacher did not push them to participate harder in the activities then they were comfortable with because there were different options that they were able to do that started easy and got more challenging depending on what they picked to do. Mrs. Miller also kept the students in mind to help them out with their math skills because she told them that she is there if they have issues figuring out how many times they needed to participate depending on the color, number on the uno card and the instruction at the corner of the zone. B. The video that I observed is Analyzing Social Issues in Small Group Book Club Discussions. The case number for this video is 520. B1 . In the video the class that I observed was Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop course. The age of the class ranges from 12- 15 years old. Grade level of the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop is 7 th and 8 th grade. There are 31 students in the classroom, 25 White students, 2 Black students, and 4 Asian students. The other aspect of the population of the classroom is that 5 of the students in the classroom are on an IEP or a 504 plan. One student in the classroom is from Russia and English is their second language. Two students that are in the classroom are Autistic. 1/3 of the class is high achievers who read and write at grade level or above grade level. B2. The development stage of the student population is Kohlberg’s stage of Moral development. Also, conventional development stage. 2a. The developmental need that align with the population is the conventional stage of Kohlberg’s moral development. This stage begins at the age of nine of a child the students in the video are ages 12 to 15 years old which the students are in conventional stage. It also aligns with the development stage of conventional because there is a sense of morality which we see in the video because the students are using personal and social relationships. In the video you can see that the students in the classroom are wanting to ensure positive relationships and that starts with obeying the rules and what the teachers have to say. 2b. In observing Analyzing Social Issues in Small Group Book Club Discussions Kohlberg’s stages of Moral Development aligns with the lesson in the classroom because teacher put students in groups and gives the students a book to the small group to read together. It is also Moral development because they are asked questions about the social and moral behaviors that are in the book that the students are reading. The stories also helped with Moral development with the situations that the characters were dealing with socially and ethical issues. In the first group stories that the student read was about a death that
occurred by an accident that was a social issue. In the second group there was two different social issues which is rebellion and religion. The last group of students with books is about racism which is a social issue. 3. One learning theory that aligns with the teacher’s approach in the video is social cognitive. 3a. One example of an instructional strategy that the teacher uses in the video is Social Cognitive thinking theory. The instructional strategy that is used is to help the students increase their metacognition. The teachers use different stories that have different issues in them so the students can really think about the situation that is going on. Because the classroom has students in the classroom that are at different learning levels which includes students with autism the students are just put into random groups and one student is appointed to be the leader of the group. The leader was to ask questions related to the reading and motivate the group to complete the assignment and readings. The teachers would go to each group and ask them questions about the social issues were and how they came up with what the social issues are and how they figured out how they got to the social issue in the story. 3b. Social cognitive learning theories aligns with the lesson because the teachers in the video are there to motivate the students when it comes to thinking about the social issues in the stories. It also aligns with metacognition because the students were placed in certain groups that the teachers knew would be a good match in the group to keep the motivation up. The assignment was also a cooperative learning experience. In the video the students looked very happy and on task on the readings. They enjoyed that they were able to discuss how they got to the answers when the students were asked about the ethical and social cognitive issues. C. The third video that I observed was Comparing “Death of a Moth” by Annie Dillard and “The Death of the Moth” by Virginia Woolf in a Student- Led Discussion. The case number of this video is 524. C1. The ages of this Advanced Placement Language and Composition class the age of the students are 16 to 17 years of age. The grade level is 11 th and 12 th grade students, with one 10 th grader that is 15 years old. There are 27 students in the classroom. There are 11 males and 16 females in the class. The Advanced Placement Language and Composition class is a diverse, ethnically and culturally. All of the students are Native English speakers. With one student that is on an IEP. C2. One developmental stage of the student population in the video is Cognitive development. It is a cognitive development because there is an open discussion going on in the video. It is making the students think more deeply about the texts that they read.
