PSY 211 Module Eight Activity Applying Piaget’s concept of perspective-taking in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is perspective-taking so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o How might you seeing Jasmine’s situation from her point of view inspire her to advocate for herself? Perspective-taking has been defined as having the capacity to detect or comprehend what another person is thinking in a given situation (Soeiro, 2020). Perspective taking is highly important in my talk with Jasmine since I am in a completely different situation than she is right now, and I need to consider her points of view so that I can understand her struggles and demonstrate that her feelings matter. I was treated differently at the same position she is now, therefore I must consider that she has had a different experience than I have in order to offer her compassion and assist her in navigating the issue positively. If Jasmine sees that I understand her point of view and that I support her, she will be more likely to advocate for herself, reducing her anxiety that no one will listen to her concerns. Applying Goleman’s concept of empathy in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is empathy so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o In Jasmine’s case, what do you believe is the main difference between perspective- taking and empathy? Empathy, according to Daniel Goleman, is the ability to tune in to people and feel their emotions (Goleman, 2013). Empathy is critical to my talk with Jasmine because I must be willing to put myself in her position and feel her emotions in order to understand and support her. I was treated fairly at the same job that she is being treated unfairly at, therefore I must be able to comprehend how she feels and be willing to look within myself to see how I would react if I were in her situation. I believe that the main difference between perspective-taking and empathy in Jasmine's situation is that for perspective-taking, I must try to see things from her point of view, whereas for empathy, I must make myself experience the feelings and emotions she is experiencing. Applying Gilligan’s views on morality in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is moral reasoning so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o According to Gilligan, which type of morality best aligns with Jasmine’s situation: care-based morality, justice-based morality, or both? Explain your response. Gilligan claimed that women emphasize an "ethics of care" as their morals and sense of self mature, whereas men favor an "ethics of justice” (Health Research Funding, 2017). Moral reasoning is crucial to my talk with Jasmine because it raises the question of whether what is going on is morally right or wrong. I am aware that Jasmine's treatment is unjust and wrong, so I must address this while discussing 1
the problem with her. I believe that care-based morality best fits Jasmine's situation since women are more interested in changing things for the better rather than seeking justice. As you wrap up your conversation with Jasmine, integrate the perspectives of Piaget, Goleman, and Gilligan by answering the following questions: o According to Piaget, what is one factor that could inhibit your ability to take Jasmine’s perspective? How might Goleman’s concept of empathy mitigate this factor? o How does Goleman’s concept of empathy relate to Piaget’s concept of perspective- taking in your conversation with Jasmine? o How do Gilligan’s views on morality relate to Goleman’s concept of empathy in your conversation with Jasmine? According to Piaget, one issue that may limit my capacity to understand Jasmine's point of view is that I am not in her circumstance, and while I worked at the same location she does now, I was never put in her situation. Goleman's concept of empathy may alleviate this issue by allowing me to recall a time when I was unfairly treated, allowing me to put myself in her shoes and feel the feelings and emotions she is experiencing. Goleman's concept of empathy is related to Piaget's concept of perspective-taking in my conversation with Jasmine since trying to see things from her point of view allows me to feel the feelings she is experiencing. This will allow me to better empathize with her in her present situation. Gilligan's views on morality tie to Goleman's concept of empathy in my conversation with Jasmine because by attempting to perceive what is ethically right in her situation, I am able to grasp how she must feel about being treated unfairly. I can identify with her since I see she is being mistreated and feel the emotions she must be experiencing. References Goleman, D. (2013, October 8). Empathy 101.
