2 Ethical Considerations Ethical considerations are an important aspect of counseling because it calls counselors to act with fairness . My main concern was to ensure that I captured what was essential for the client as well as what was important for the client. Confidentiality and informed consent are integral parts of counseling not only during assessments but throughout the counseling career. According to the National Career Development Association (NCDA) (2015) Code of Ethics, “a code of ethics helps to define professional behavior and serves to protect the public, the profession, and those who practice within the profession” meaning indicating that it is an ongoing process that counselors must uphold. Apart from focusing on Sections A (Professional Relationship), B (Confidentiality, Privileged Communication, and Privacy), and C (Professional Responsibility), I was worried about the evaluation, assessment, and interpretation (Section E) process, especially with the competence to use and interpret the results of the assessment. This was because I am aware that I do not have enough knowledge as a counseling student to present and interpret the results the right way at the moment. It is therefore essential that counselors should ensure that they have relevant and updated knowledge about the assessments and how they are interpreted before they use them. My second concern related to the type of assessment to be chosen for each client. What would be the response should a client not identify with any of the reports? I am not sure of how to answer that at the moment apart from starting over and or asking about the conditions that surrounded the client when they took assessments. In all, my understanding is that the client comes first, and if counselors abide by the codes of ethics that bind the profession, see counsel from other professionals and realize their personal biases, they can always offer counsel to the best of their abilities.
