1 PSY 328 Module Five Activity Hailey Hanson First, read the Shapiro Library articles, Psychologist Stanley Milgram Begins Obedience-to-Authority Experiments , Stanford Prison Experiment , and Moving Personality Beyond the Person-Situation Debate . Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Your responses should each be about 2 to 5 sentences in length. Analyzing Psychological Experiments o Describe the major takeaways from the Milgram experiments. The Milgram experiment showed that under a circumstance where an authoritative figure is giving an average person orders they are more than likely to follow through with the order even if it goes against their normal responsibilities (Davidson 2022). This explains why people were willing to go through with killing and harassing the Jewish people during the Holocaust because in their minds they are just following orders (Davidson 2022). It is scary to think that some people will follow through with what someone tells them to do just because they are in a position of authority. o Describe the major takeaways from the Stanford prison experiment. The Stanford prison experiment showed us that people will conform to the social roles they are assigned and when some people are put in a position of power they will abuse it like the guards did throughout the experiment. The participants in this experiment became too involved in their roles and with little resistance conformed to the roles they were assigned. Zimbardo had to cut the experiment short because there was too much abuse from the prison guards. Sometimes we view people in power as stronger or above us but really, they are just another human being placed in a job with more responsibility than the rest of us. o Describe the ethical implications of these experiments. Both of the experiments would be seen as unethical today because of the emotional trauma the subjects dealt with during and after the experiments. There should have been more rules and protocols set in place for the subjects of the Stanford experiment because they were emotional and physically abuse by other participants. The Milligram experiments have changed the way military officers are trained (Davidson 2022) this is a positive to come out of the experiment so that people in positions of power don’t abu se their authority. Implications of the Person-Situation Debate o Describe examples of behaviors that highlight trait-based stability in the workplace or school. In a work setting trait-based stability can been seen through extraversion or introversion that is persistent. When some who has a car spends every lunch in the lunch room to talk to people and is the best with handling customer conversations they are exhibiting trait-based stability. When someone is eating lunch in their car or they are really qu ick to do the jobs that don’t deal with people they are showing trait-based introversion.
2 o Describe examples of behaviors that highlight personality states in the workplace or school. A personality state is when someone comes in and is in a bad mood because they have a test coming up soon for their license and they haven’t studied. This makes it a personality state because the person is a procrastinator and is a temporary feeling based on actions or the current state of things. o Explain how your perspectives on your interactions with others might be impacted by the person-situation debate. At my job right now, we are short staffed and have no permanent pharmacist in our pharmacy and every day I go in there is multiple call offs. When I am at work I am quieter and more reserved now because I am so stressed and tired of juggling everyone else’s job on top of my own. I think my interactions with others change throughout the day based on how I am feeling about the work flow that day. This may affect how happy I appear to customers. o In Module Three, you were asked the extent to which you thought personality could change over time. Explain whether your response to that question has changed or stayed the same as a result of studying the person-situation debate. My response to the question has stayed the same I do believe personalities change over time based on different experiences we go through or people we meet. We are constantly evolving as people and learning new things that effect how we feel about certain things. I think the people around us like our loved ones can see we our personalities change throughout our life.
