KEY ASSESSMENT EDU 3263 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT 1 Key Assessment Vanessa Soberon Central State University Ms. Pamela Groach March 1, 2023
KEY ASSESSMENT EDU 3263 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT 2 Key Assessment I have enjoyed taking this class and have learned so much about classroom management and student discipline. I have been working as an TK for four years and have learned so much from the teacher I work with too. I have been able to take back to the classroom different classroom management strategies that I have read and watching videos too. I was able to observe one TK classrooms and three Kindergarten classrooms. I went into the TK classroom at different times during the day to observe the teacher do her morning routines and her classroom management rules as well as centers. I was able to do the same for the kindergarten classroom as well. I really like the program that the TK teacher is using for classroom management and student discipline. Over the month of February, I was able to observe TK and Kinder classrooms. Each classroom followed the same classroom expectations, but it was the TK classroom management that I like the best. Mrs. Gentry using a program called “Conscious Discipline” by Dr. Becky A. Bailey. Mrs. Gentry explained to me that this helps teach young students the foundation of solving their own behavior through problem solving through social and emotional learning. As I was reading through the book, it had the same similarities as chapter nine in our textbook. Our textbook and Conscious Discipline say that problem solving is one method that helps students with social-emotional learning. According to Jones & Jones (2021), Meeting with students to help them effectively learn new skills that support successful involvement in the classroom can be called problem solving, social problem solving, or behavior problem solving. We use the term problem solving to differentiate this type of interaction for academic problem solving”. I believe that students need to have that concept

If I was the teacher in this classroom the two strategies I would take, and use is the Conscious Discipline and to develop my own effective classroom management. Conscious Disciple is a great tool to teach young students how to control their emotions. When I was in the TK classroom the students did daily commitment that they would commit to for the day. A couple of examples were “I commit to keep my hands to myself” or I commit to raise a quiet hand to talk”. When students didn’t follow through their commitments Mrs. Gentry would remind students about their commitments and at the end of the day she would ask them if they followed their commitments if they put it their name in the red basket or the “Opps try again tomorrow basket”. As I was in classroom students would remind other students about their commitments. It was neat to see students taking their commitment seriously and reminded their peers too. Mrs. Gentry shared with me that she has been using Conscious Discipline for the pasted five years and it has help her with classroom management and has tried in with the school PBIS. I have witnessed her students doing well in her classroom. I hope that when I become a teacher, I can use this program. My personal experiences from observing, taking with the teachers and learning from taking course has been great for me. I have learned so much and I feel confident that I will be able to have great classroom management. I enjoyed talking to all the kinder teachers, but the TK teacher and classroom was great to see. I took notes during each module about how I can use classroom management for my future classroom. I plan on making sure I establish routines and making sure I keep them and don’t change anything, because it can cause behavioral issues.
