PSY 375 Project One Milestone Template Select a specialty and target population for your clinic from the Project One Milestone Options document, linked in the Prompt section of this assignment in your course. Next, using the Shapiro Library or other sources, identify a primary source to support your brochure. This source should be a primary research report containing an introduction, a description of methods and participants, a result section, and a discussion and conclusion. It should not be a review article, a meta-analysis, or a letter to an editor. You must address each of the rubric criteria listed below in about 750 to 1,000 words total. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Select your clinic’s specialty from the options provided and explain why you selected that option. My clinic’s specialty is attention. I selected my clinic’s specialty to be attention because attention span and ADHD are common issues discussed with children. I also work with some children that are going through the process of being assessed/diagnosed with ADHD and I am interested in learning more about attention and ADHD so I can accurately help these children I work with and spread awareness on the topics. Select a target population for your clinic from the options provided and explain why you selected that option. The target population for my clinic will be school-aged children that have been diagnosed with ADHD or other attention disorders. I chose this target group as there are many children that are suffering or struggling from attention disorders and many of them have trouble getting the help they need. This clinic can be a safe place along with a being a helping hand for these children along with their parents who are struggling to deal with these disorders. Create an annotated bibliography entry for the primary source provided . Sources should be described in your own words for a general audience. Your entry should include a summary of the following: o The problem is addressed. o The methodology, measurements, and sample o The findings o Conclusions and limitations of the research design Tamm, L., Hughes, C., Ames, L., Pickering, J., Silver, C. H., Stavinoha, P., Castillo, C. L., Rintelmann, J., Moore, J., Foxwell, A., Bolanos, S. G., Hines, T., Nakonezny, P. A., & Emslie, G. (2010). Attention Training for School-Aged Children With ADHD: Results of an Open Trial. Journal of Attention Disorders, 14(1), 86-94. https://doi-org.ezproxy.snhu.edu/10.1177/1087054709347446 This article conducts a study to determine if Pay Attention!, an intervention training program can be used in a clinical setting to help children with ADHD. The goal is to determine if the children in this training program are improving their attention and functioning. For the method
of this study, it will consist of twenty-three schools with children with ADHD participating in sixteen sessions of the training program along with two meetings a week. There were twenty- three students in this study and their ages ranged from 8 and 14 years old. All the participants were Caucasian along with all having an IQ of over eighty-five. For the measures there were four rating scales used. The first was the DSM-IV scale that was used for the clinicians, parents, and teachers to rate how well each symptom describes the child. The next scale was Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function that was used to have parents and teachers rate executive functioning in school and at home. The next scale was the Consumer Satisfaction Rating where parents and participants rated the intervention. The last scale used was Clinical Global Impressions which clinicians used to rate the severity of the child’s impairment with ADHD. The findings in this study show us that the Pay Attention! Intervention is feasible to administer to school-aged children and is shown to be effective in reducing ADHD symptoms as well as improving executive functioning. Overall, this study produced positive and beneficial outcomes, but it does have some limitations. There was a small sample group of only twenty-three children, there was no diversity among the participants, and a lack of a control group. Create an annotated bibliography entry for the primary source of your choice . Sources should be described in your own words for a general audience. Your entry should include a summary of the following: o The problem is addressed. o The methodology, measurements, and sample o The findings o Conclusions and limitations of the research design Wong T-Y, Chang Y-T, Wang M-Y, Chang Y-H. The effectiveness of child-centered play therapy for executive functions in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry. 2023;28(3):877-894. doi:10.1177/13591045221128399 This article aims to examine the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy on neurological deficits and children with ADHD. The participants for this study were recruited from the department of Psychiatry at China Medical University Hospital. Children who met the criteria for ADHD were recruited for the study. There are fifty-two participants in this study seventeen that have ADHD and thirty-five typically developing children. The children ranged from the ages of seven and twelve years old. There were several different assessments used in this study. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale was used to determine the intelligence level of the participants. Also, the Child Behavior Checklist-Parent Report was used to evaluate emotional and behavioral self-regulation. The findings in this study showed us that after having CCPT the children with ADHD had improved cognitive flexibility. After receiving CCPT the children with ADHD were also better at multitasking and improved their ability to switch from one task to another. Overall, this was a well conducted study. However, there were some limitations such as a smaller sample group and a small age range. There were also other underlining issues the children had that played a role in the results. Compare and contrast the cognitive interventions presented in your articles (at least one intervention per article) and explain why you think they would be effective. Include the following in your comparison:
o The respective strengths of each intervention o How the articles address your target population. If they do not, what would need to be modified in the intervention? The cognitive intervention presented in the first article was the online platform. The online learning platform allowed the children to work on and strengthen their skills on self-discipline. They had to work on staying seated in their chairs while also working on staying focused and interacting in the learning within the online platform. This article addresses my target population of school-aged children as the study was conducted to create and assess an intervention training program to help children with ADHD in clinical settings. The cognitive intervention presented in the second article was child-centered play therapy (CCPT). The CCPT helped the children improve executive functioning skills, improve emotional and behavioral self- regulation along with improving their cognitive flexibility and multitasking skills. The sessions were in rooms with plenty of toys and materials to allow the children full access to self- expression. These children were also able to strengthen their independence through play. The article addresses my population of school-aged children as the study was conducted to see the benefits of CCPT with children with ADHD along with typically developing children. The CCPT has so many improvements with children with ADHD such as improving cognitive flexibility and multitasking skills. The first source concentrates on what the adults in the child’s life can do to assist them while the second article lets the children have time to themselves and they assist themselves under supervision. Both articles work to find improvements for children with ADHD.
