Report
Integration of Research and Practice This week you have synthesized your learning this quarter. For this discussion, reflect on that experience and reply to the following prompts: How do you see yourself using your knowledge of research in your future career? How has your thinking about research changed because of taking this course? What questions about research remain for you? How do you see yourself using your knowledge of research in your future career? In my future career as a LPC, I see myself using my knowledge of research to help provide reliable and valid evidence through the many aspects of the counseling profession. By learning how to research, how to find empirical studies, and non- empirical when needed, and how to conduct research studies, this will ultimately benefit the expansion of my knowledge on how to help my client, how it can increase critical thinking during sessions, and how I can stay up-to-date with the different types of counseling theories and treatments that are constantly changing. How has your thinking about research changed because of taking this course? My ultimate thought process about research has changed by taking this course. I don’t believe that I ever took research classes before. Learning how to find empirical and non-empirical as well as qualitative and quantitative studies was the most interesting yet challenging part for me. Learning about the different types of articles that are out there will help me in my future career when I need to research a specific topic that pertains to or about my client. In addition, learning how to conduct research was the most enjoyable part about taking this class because it did actually peak my interest in possibly dabbling in research later on. I always said
that I would never conduct or participate in conducting a research study, mainly because it seemed like a lot of work, but that was before learning all of the elements that are needed to conduct a study. Now that I have gained knowledge on how to conduct studies, I am eager to possible join a research study after having gaining my license. Learning about research has definitely changing my thought process. What questions about research remain for you? I feel as though the only question that remains about research for me is how I can determine if the study I want to develop is worthy enough of creating a research study. What if I feel as though the topic is strong enough and has clearly not been explored yet; however, I reach out to other local researchers and pitch my idea and they feel as though the topic is not worth the time to study? How do I make that call and determine if I want to go forward with developing this study or I should call it quits? While I do want to be confident in my work, I don’t want to waste my time and resources that will not bring benefits to myself, my clients, or the counseling field.
