Module Two Social media is used by billions of people throughout the world. The relationship between social media use and psychological functioning, especially anxiety and depression, has demonstrated varied results. Some studies have found that social media use has a positive impact on well-being by facilitating online social connections or enhancing physical (offline) interactions (Ancis, R., J., 2021). One psychological benefit of frequent social media use could be bonding with others. Or the feeling of being a part of something. The article by the Pew Research Center describes benefits like having more trust in people and feeling more supported (Hampton K., Rainie, L., Lu, W., Shin, I., Purcell, K., 2015). These feelings in my opinion relieves stress. In the article, “ Social Media and the Cost of Caring”, researchers suggest the relationship between social media use and stress is indirect (Hampton K., Rainie, L., Lu, W., Shin, I., Purcell, K., 2015). However, the psychological cost of frequent social media use could be depression or anxiety. In the article, “Social Media Use, Psychological Function, and Well-Being”, Julie Ancis Ph.D., suggests that a meta-analysis of the mental effects of social media use found a weak to moderate association between the smartphone and stress, anxiety, and depression ( Ancis, J., Ph.D. 2021). This is why I believe the psychological cost of frequent social media use could cause depression or anxiety. Research findings tell us that our awareness of other people’s stressful life events on social media can increase our stress levels. Social media makes us more connected to our family and friends. I believe that witnessing the stressful events of our family and friends can increase stress in our own lives.
