PSY 328 Module Six Journal Template First, read Chapter 13 of your text. Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Explain to what extent you value flexibility in yourself. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. Flexibility is something that I try very hard to have when it comes to adjusting to stress and different scenarios. I think it is a valuable trait because it enables me to have a healthier response to different situations. I tend to value it a little more because I do not think that I am flexible enough, depending on the scenario. Describe your most common responses to stressors . Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. While I have certainly avoided and approached stressors, I think that my most common response is to approach them. I tend to not want to leave things unresolved, and don’t want to be constantly thinking about my stressors. If I procrastinate my stressors, I end up becoming more anxious and stressed by them, but that is a close second in how I respond. Based on the results of your Big Five Personality Test and your own personal reflection, on a scale of low, mixed, or high, describe how you would rate your stress tolerance using the traits of hardiness, optimism, and dispositional optimism. Your response should be about 4 to 6 sentences in length. My Big Five Personality Test showed me having a low emotional stability score, which would indicate not being able to handle stress very well. I’d like to think that while I am lower in optimism and dispositional optimism, that I have a higher hardiness trait for stress tolerance. While I may not always see the positives in situations, I do think that I have been able to endure quite a bit. I think that my stress tolerance is adequate, but it also depends on the situation. Even though I have high hardiness, having low optimism can make stress harder for me to process. Describe how you struggle with traits that negatively affect the coping process. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. Being a pessimist has affected me negatively in the coping process. If I were able to look at certain things with a more positive outcome, it may alter the way in which I handle situations. If I were under the assumption that things will out, I would likely be less stressed during the process. Describe the strategies you use when you find yourself experiencing cognitive distortions . Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. The strategies that I use when I experience cognitive distortions vary depending on the exact situation. As previously stated, I can look at situations pessimistically, and so there are times where I will anxiously avoid something or use ruminative strategies. If the stressor is something that I think is minimal or that I’ve dealt with before, I will use problem-focused strategies. Describe the applications of adjustment and coping you see in your experiences in the workplace, at school, or in your relationships with others. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. 1
The applications of adjustment and coping that I use in my life would be during my workplace where I think I am the most flexible. When my job gets stressful, I try to approach the issues to resolve them, but sometimes I do experience burnout. In my relationships with others, I think that I am more avoidant and use sensitization to try to picture scenarios before they happen. Doing this makes me feel more prepared. 2
