Identify which case you chose and which theory methodology you would apply. For the purposes of this discussion, I have chosen to utilize the case of Steve, a 62-year-old male on, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Steve and his partner of over 22 years have been struggling with some distance since his diagnosis. Steve is struggling with anxiety and fear of the possibility that his husband could leave him for someone who is younger and not sick. The fear and anxiety Steve is experiencing is causing him to struggle with sleep and weight loss. Steve has minimal support outside of his partner as he has had no contact with his family after he came out about his sexuality to them 25 years ago. I would like to apply the person-centered approach to Steve's situation as I believe this techniques way of utilizing active listening, unconditional positive regard, and goal setting to build a therapeutic relationship that is conducive to promoting positive change. From the sound of the case study, it appears Steve could be dealing with some feelings of abandonment stemming from his family disowning him during such a crucial time in his life. He is now worried his partner will abandon him as well. This approach will focus on helping Steve to overcome some of these feelings and assist with the building of self-esteem and empower him to feel more in control (Holland, 2011). Discuss at least three strategies from the theory base you would apply to the case. Provide at least one reference to substantiate your strategies. Strategy 1: Active Listening- This is completed by giving the client your full and undivided attention while they discuss their life and current stressors. This can be done while providing them with reflective and meaningful responses. This strategy will allow Steve to feel heard and validated about his feelings of fear and his concerns about his husband's behavior. Strategy 2: Unconditional Positive Regard- Unconditional positive regard combined with active listening and empathy assist the therapist in creating an environment conducive to therapy. This environment will make the patient will feel comforted in and able to speak freely about his feelings. Strategy 3: Autonomy- It is important in this approach to not make decisions for the client and allow them to be autonomous in their goals and decisions. Advice giving is often risky and should be avoided. Rather than giving advice it is important in person centered therapy to assist the client in exploring the potential outcomes of their decisions. Explain how these strategies meet the potential cultural needs of Stephanie or Steve.
Person Centered Therapy is a culturally competent approach to any case. This approach takes into consideration the factors that make a client unique and set their situation aside from others. Steves unique experiences with his sexuality, abandonment, illness, and fear is all part of his cultural identity. This approach allows him to explore these experiences without judgement and fear. Explain why this theory base is the best fit for this case. I feel the person-centered approach is most effective in Steve's case based on the way it treats him as an individual and takes into account the experiences he has had in his life. Steve is going through a life altering event where he has been diagnosed with a potentially terminal diagnosis and it has brought up a lot of issues from his past. Steve has been judged and discounted for his lifestyle in the past and fears this will happen with his new diagnosis. The active listening, unconditional positive regard, and empowerment utilized in this theory will help him to work through these feelings and find the power with in to take some control of this life.
