Week 4: Antipsychotic Drug Therapy For this week’s discussion I chose to look into and research antipsychotic drug therapy. According to the text DSM-5 and Family Systems, the authors state “Some of the most severe and debilitating mental illnesses involve the experience of psychosis—a set of symptoms characterized by a loss of contact with reality.” (King, 2017, pg 29) Symptoms of psychosis include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking and speech, grossly disorganized or abnormal behavior, and negative symptoms. Delusions are disturbances of thought content. People with delusions might believe others are plotting to harm them. Delusions can be difficult not only for the individual but also for family members. King (2017) asks an eye-opening question “If you were attempting to provide emotional support to a loved one experiencing psychosis, can you imagine how difficult it would be to distinguish reality from fantasy and how to appropriately respond to them?” (pg 30) When assessing for psychosis, it is important to consider both the impact of the psychosis on the family, and also the impact of the family on the person with psychosis.
