Module 2 Field Notes Assignment Answer the following questions to fill out your “field notes” for Chapters 1-4. The questions are designed to give you a chance to connect the material with your own thoughts, opinions, and experiences. I highly suggest that you work through the chapter portions of the field notes assignment as you read each chapter so that your thoughts from the reading are still fresh. Point breakdowns are detailed within each question as “# pts”. Chapter 5 (10 pts total) 1. Revisit your thoughts on question 5 of the previous Field Notes assignment and name the specific topic you discussed. Do you think the Neo-Freudian approach might address this topic differently (1 pt)? In what ways (at least 3 sentences; 9 pts)? You may also compare and contrast other topics to receive full credit on this question. Chapter 6 (14 pts total) 2. Describe an example of resilience. This can be a personal example (if you are comfortable with sharing), an example you witnessed, or a historical example of a popular figure. Use the point breakdown in points a-e to construct your response: a. In one to two sentences, provide some background of their circumstance (2 pts) b. In at least three sentences describe how they overcame their obstacle(s) (6 pts). c. Connect the example of resilience to at least one of the research findings presented in the chapter (4 pts). d. Include the in-text citation(s) of the research finding(s) (1 pt). e. Include the page number of the text (1 pt). Chapter 7 (10 pts total) 3. Recall the discussion of criticisms of the trait approach on page 149. In at least five sentences, describe your thoughts on the potential consequences of overinterpreting personality test scores (10 pts). You may structure your response however you like, but here are some questions to provide some food for thought. o Do you think personality test scores are helpful for understanding people? o What are the benefits of using personality tests to understand people (e.g., tests are usually cheap)? o What are the potential negative aspects of using personality tests to understand people, considering the limitations of personality tests? o Should personality tests be used to filter people for important decisions, such as who to hire? Why or why not? Chapter 8 (11 pts total) 4. Select one topic presented in Chapter 8 and please share your personal thoughts, experiences (your own or witnessed), or opinions about the topic. Please write at least five sentences (10pts) and include the page number of the topic within the text (1pt). Some topic options may include social anxiety, optimism vs. pessimism, dealing with adversity, emotional
expressiveness, or Type A vs. Type B personality. As well, here are some optional questions to help direct your response: o What popular media characters represent a Type A and a Type B personality? What specific characteristics of their personality represent each personality type? o What would you suggest or do to help a friend who is experiencing social anxiety? o Is there any value to being pessimistic? In what contexts might pessimism be helpful?
