As an elementary education teacher , you will make decisions based on your knowledge of child development continuously, many times without even realizing it. Over the years, child development research and theory has shaped early childhood education and the decisions teachers make in the classroom. After watching the video below, describe a time when you observed what you believed to be atypical development of a child in the physical, cognitive, or social-emotional domain. What knowledge did you base this from? Discuss the ways you will differentiate activities and make instructional decisions in your classroom based on children’s developmental readiness. What immediately comes to mind when thinking of this discussion question is a particular student that I have worked with frequently over the last 2 years. This student becomes red and flushed in the face, with a particular glaze/stare that comes over his eyes. When he is in these moments, we immediately remove all students/staff within range, he becomes very violent toward anyone who becomes his target. He has punched staff in the face, pulled hair, whipped chrome books at teachers, swears a lot, throws furniture that knocks over the disabled children causing them to hit their head, and the list goes on. This student is now in 3rd grade (twice my size) and I am learning he was kicked out of his old school when he was in just DK. If you stay on his good side, he can have a soft spot by giving hugs. But he has this look about him where we can tell when it is time to remove the other students, we can see it in his eyes. I should mention that he has no diagnosis or disability. This behavior is atypical to me compared to the “normal” adolescent or defiant behavior we typically see. I base this from the knowledge of the fact you can normally have a conversation with the student about what happen, usually they feel some kind of remorse, and most of the time there is a reason for why it happened or what caused them to react that way... I will make instructional decisions and differentiate activities based off each individual student, and their cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development. If the behavior is such as what I explained above, I will be collaborating with the principal and staff involved for a plan moving forward. If the behavior is typical of what we see, I will continue with the behavioral plan within the classroom/building so that I can then begin differentiating the right academic plan for each student. I understand there will also be students who are atypical academically as well. Therefore, I will be evaluating each individual student based upon their personal cognitive development, physical development, and social-emotional development. This supports the colleges conceptual framework by: Engaging in Reflective Practice- engaging in reflective practice to think deeply about their professional practice and the impact it has on students’
success. They engage in reflection to learn about their students, themselves, and the art of teaching. Candidates reflect on their planning, instructional, and assessment practices to make needed adjustments to ensure all students meet academic learning targets and grow socially and emotionally.
