As an elementary education teacher , you will make decisions based on your knowledge of child development continuously, many times without even realizing it. Over the years, child development research and theory has shaped early childhood education and the decisions teachers make in the classroom. After watching the video below, describe a time when you observed what you believed to be atypical development of a child in the physical, cognitive, or social-emotional domain. What knowledge did you base this from? Discuss the ways you will differentiate activities and make instructional decisions in your classroom based on children’s developmental readiness. Children's development is a dynamic process that encompasses various domains, including physical, cognitive, and social-emotional aspects. As an educator, it is crucial to be attentive to atypical patterns of development that may arise in any of these domains. A time when I observed what I believed to be atypical development in a child was with my own son. His kindergarten year he was really struggling to learns and thrive. Fortunately, my sister was his kindergarten teacher and she also expressed some concerns with his lack of focus and limited progress. So, by Christmas break, I scheduled an appointment with his pediatrician and we were able to learn what was going on with him and causing him issues. He was diagnosed with Adhd as well as Add. I was a bit upset because I did not want to medicate him. After some trial and error, we found what works for him and he is now thriving in elementary school. He often receives rewards for good behavior, makes the honor roll every marking period and has been student of the month multiple times. I think different ways I will differentiate as an educator between students development and readiness will be based of each individual child. Although we do expect children in the same grade to be prepared on a similar readiness, not all children learn the same or as quickly. Learning this from my own children, I do believe will really help me in the future.
