SPU-101 Final Exam _____/30 Name: Emma Stalsitz 1. How does play help the social and emotional development of preschoolers? (2pts.) Play is an important part of social and emotional development for children. Through play, children can express their feelings and learn to cope with sadness, anger, and fear. Additionally, play also helps children develop social skills such as sharing, cooperation, and communication. 2. What impact does a hearing impairment have on a child’s learning when it occurs post- lingual? (2 pts) Children with hearing loss have difficulty with all areas of academic achievement, especially reading and mathematical concepts. Children with mild to moderate hearing loss, on average, achieve one to four grade levels lower than their peers with normal hearing unless appropriate management occurs. 3. The bell curve is an instrument that classifies the intellectual abilities of students. How does a bell curve help a teacher determine the intellectual level of a student? What is the average range? (4pts) On the bell curve, the Mean is in the middle, at the 50th percentile. The average or Mean score on most tests is 100 (Mean = 100). Most test-scoring systems have a Mean of 100 and a Standard Deviation of ±15. Scores between 85 and 115 capture the middle two- thirds of the children tested. 4. They learn about meaningful and relevant topics to their lives. This creates what is known as intrinsic motivation, in other words, children learn because they want to learn, not because they have to learn. 8. If a child has a language disorder, it may impact the social development of that child. In what ways could it impact the child? (2 pts) Children with language disorders perform at a poor or insufficient academic level because they struggle with reading, have difficulty understanding and expressing language, avoid attending school, and have difficulty with tests. They also have difficulty understanding social cues and often show poor judgment. 9. Describe three ways that learning activities can have opportunities embedded in routine- based instruction. (3 pts.) Three ways that learning activities can have opportunities embedded in routine-based instruction: Introduction of Challenges: Introduce challenges within routine tasks to encourage problem-solving. For instance, if students are used to solving math problems at a basic level, incorporate more real-life scenarios to stimulate critical thinking. Differentiation: Recognize and accommodate diverse learning needs within routine tasks. Tailor activities to different skill levels or provide additional resources for those who need extra support.
