A. 1. The theory that I chose, that I identify with is humanistic/motivation. 2. The humanistic/motivation theory is about more than just learning for the student. It is about understanding that every student is different and learning stems from the feelings of the students. “ Humanistic teachers believe that knowledge and feelings go hand-in-hand in the learning process. Cognitive and affective learning are both important to humanistic learning,” (WGU, 2023). I believe that students feelings and thoughts have a large role in their learning ability. For example, if they do not feel comfortable/safe then they are not going to be in the best mindset to retain information, to learn. In order for students to learn and achieve a great education they must feel comfortable, this can start by building a relationship with students. I also believe that I identify with this theory the closet because I believe that sometimes there is not always a curriculum that teaches what students need to learn. Sometimes its about taking a step back and figuring out what it is that your students need and realizing that may be different for every class that you have. Sometimes you have to adjust your plans to fit what is best for your students that day. I want my students physiological needs to be met. 3. This theory would help me understand developmental student needs in the classroom at two different grade levels because the theory is based off of Maslows Heiracharchy of needs. At each grade level, the needs are going to be different. The needs of a Kindergartener is going to be different than the needs of a 7th grader. This theory helps me understand the developmental needs in the classroom because it lays out the needs. In the Humanistic/Motivation theory it explains how the needs of students are what leads to their behaviors. These behaviors are what leads to the success with education. A 7th grader is going to be at a different maturity level than a kindergartener, obviously. As a kindergartener they are just learning how to learn, they are excited and everything is new. They are just starting to feel a sense of pride in their work. The needs to each grade will be different. Understanding this theory would allow me to make that adjustment between grades, knowing how those needs will be different. A 7th grader is going to have more goals in their education. The motivation between these two grade levels will be different. As a kindergartener they may have more motivation to complete something to get a piece of candy while the 7th grader may have more motivation to complete an assignment to have no homework. 4. Two learning barriers that the humanistic/motivation theory can address within the physical development stage are psycholigical and safety, the first two needs in Maslows Heirachry of Needs. Psychological needs are the requirements for living. They are the basic things that we need to survive such as food, water, shelter and clothing. The humanistic theory can address this barrier because if these basic needs are not being met within the child, their learning will not be needs will not be met. The theory states that in order for students to learn their basic needs need
to be met first. If a student is coming to school hungry, they may not have the same motivation to learn/complete their work as a student who is coming to school with a full stomach. This can be the same for a student who is coming to school without a home to go back to. They may be more tired and hungry than those students who do have a home to go back to. There is a lack of attention that comes with these needs not being met. To address these barriers, it is important to allow students to eat, or provide them with food to it. Making sure that the students psychological needs are being met will allow that student to have more motivation to learn during school. Another barrier that the humanistic/motivation theory can address is safety. Safety is the second level of Maslows Hierarchy Level of Needs. Safety includes physical and financial. Safety is a hierarchy need and in the humanistic theory it states that all these needs need to be met first before learning. If a student does not feel safe within a classroom then their learning can be damaged. If the student does not feel physically/emotionally safe within the classroom then they are going to be thinking about that versus thinking about what is being taught. This is why creating a safe learning environment for all students is important in order for learning to take place. Before learning happens, teachers need to make sure their students feel safe. 5. The humanisitc/motivation theory would help meet the learning needs of students with different learning styles. The way this theory would help is, the theory talks about realizing that no two students are the same, each student is different. With this, each student learns differently. In order to reach each student, different learning techniques will need to be included. Some students learn visually while other students learn from hands on experiences. In order to decipher what each student needs, I will again have to build that relationship with the student first. Once I have that comfortable relationship with them, I will know what they need and I can tailor my lesson to address all the needs. I can show an example on the board and then follow up by a hands on activity. I can do small groups with students grouped together who have the same learning style. Each group would have a task that best fits their learning style. B. Western Governors University. (2020, July 30). What is humanistic learning theory in education? .
